Even in a rote story, with prosaic direction from Holmes, the lead performances ring true. Go to Full Review

With her well-meaning desire to create an inspirational story of survival and redemption, Holmes has kept the entire film extremely low-stakes. Go to Full Review
Stephen Holden New York Times Dec 8, 2016
A well-meaning but formulaic movie with not enough time to transcend predictable clichés. Go to Full Review

Holmes should be commended for wanting to spotlight the condition of the homeless and indigent, but her distance from this population is too great and her artistic skill too limited at this point to save her film from its amateurishness. Go to Full Review

Jan 28, 2019 This movie is beautiful in it's simplicity. It's honest and real and I don't get the sense that it was meant to serve anything beyond this, which refreshing. The actors are well-casted in their roles... See more
Apr 1, 2018 This movie nailed the mother and daughter dichotomy. Katie Holmes nailed her role, and the fact that she directed this is a testament to the depth of her talent. My daughter and I watched this movie and could connect with Rita and Ruthie, thankfully not because we've ever been so unfortunate, but because we've had each other through hard times. See more
Ron L Oct 18, 2017 Katie Holmes’ directorial debut is realistic in its portrayal of a struggling single mother trying to provide for her teen daughter but it is too formulaic and rather boring. See more
Han L Jul 19, 2017 I have to start by saying how much this movie touched me. Growing up with a single mother who struggled to make ends meet, and often had little to no money for the basic necessities was difficult, but it was our reality. This movie is very REAL and that's what I loved about it, this film deserves more than a 39%, it's a story about love no matter how disfunctional between a mother and a daughter, about survival and growth. What a great film to start off with Katie, I hope you continue to make more films like this! See more
George L May 18, 2017 Good movie. Realistic portrayal of a small family struggling with extreme financial difficulties.
Draco W May 17, 2017 This movie is great! The characters are believable and the story line is haunting. Does a great job of raising awareness to how some people choose to live, and that there is a better way. See more
