Critics Consensus

Director Bob Fosse and star Roy Scheider are at the top of their games in this dazzling, self-aware stage drama about a death-obsessed director-choreographer.

Even thinking about it still brings tears to my eyes. That, that is what I’m seeking when I go to the movies. All that jazz. Go to Full Review

This is a plausible milestone in the evolution of the Hollywood film, a quivering, pulsating, dynamic, excessive and flawed film that wears its alienation proudly where its heart should be. Go to Full Review
Gary Arnold Washington Post Aug 4, 2015
By the time the film is over, the movie has degenerated with a jaundiced vengeance. Fosse's sour, grandstanding cynicism imposed an intolerable burden of self-pity on his talent, our compassion and the tradition of the backstage musical. Go to Full Review

Creative and engaging, but ultimately too long for general audiences, despite Scheider giving a remarkable performance as a commercially accomplished yet personally flawed showman. Go to Full Review

All That Jazz may not be a perfect film, but it’s a perfect film to mark the end of the decade and to capture the insanity that was New Hollywood. Go to Full Review

Theodore W Jan 5, 2019 At times great, at times a little too abstract and surreal for me.
Kylo S Aug 28, 2018 When I watch "the closet picks" series from "The Criterion Collection" I often see film heads picking and praising this film. I guess that made me curious so I gave it a go myself. This is not the typical musical, but probably one of the best of the genre, at least a very uniqe one. Roy Scheider portray Joe. A man that breathe for shows and big productions where choreography is involved. He is some character and not many people like him. Well, only dancing girls that at least pretend to like him as they have sex with him to get roles or even advice. After a while more stuff opens up about our man. His daughter, his ex-wife, his pill abuse and even his feelings. He is a heavy smoker and it get's him eventually. He is in the middle of a great, big show and when he is hospitalized he refuse to give up his life. Both the show and his way of living - girls, cigs and booze. Well acted and some very good production. Big scenes and a very well told film with an excellent pace. There's singing and dancing here, often catchy songs and some cool moves too, actually. The later scenes with shows are frequent as Joe makes them up when he is in his hospital bed. They are about him. His successes and his mistakes. I liked the film quite a whole lot and with some big similarities to "8 1/2" and being one of Kubric's favorites, this is something different and interesting. Not something I would put on favorite lists, but definitely a big musical-ish film with depth and seriousness that's excellently shot. 7.5 out of 10 eyedrops. See more
Luke R Aug 19, 2018 One of the best movies about show business ever made.
Nov 19, 2017 Very little jazz, poor customer support.
Leia S Oct 12, 2017 Let me tell you something, I loved the style and camera work of this movie. It reminded me a lot of Terry Gilliam, one of my favorite directors. Extremely entertaining and inventive. I loved, loved, loved every time the movie would segway into the "white" room. This movie is trippy at times, making you second guess yourself and ask if you really saw what you just did. The writing for this movie is so tight. Very funny at times and cynical, this movie is right up my alley. The bit with the doctor using the stethoscope and he's smoking, had me rolling. What an original and hilarious idea. To summarize this movie took me completely by surprise and showed me a side of theater I'd never seen before and it was shown with such grace. This movie is without a doubt a masterpiece of cinema. I want to show it to everyone. It's more than just a musical/drama, so much more, it's a work of art. See more
Theodore S Sep 18, 2017 I didn't know much about this movie other than the fact that it was a musical about a stage director. Based off of its title, I assumed that it was going to be sort of like "Grease". However, I was completely surprised and blown away by how dark, unsettling, and haunting the film was. Its representation of death was masterfully done and absorbing at times. Also, the editing was equally impressive. It had the power to suck me in throughout its entirety. See more
