In 1836 Gen. Sam Houston (Dennis Quaid) organizes a rebel army to liberate Texas from the brutal rule of Mexican dictator General Santa Anna (Emilio Echevarría). Though vastly outnumbered, Gen. Houston's volunteer army includes such folkloric figures as Jim Bowie (Jason Patric) and Davy Crockett (Billy Bob Thornton). As Santa Anna's forces advance on San Antonio, the legendary general and his men prepare for a final heroic standoff at a battle-worn mission called the Alamo.

Critics Consensus

Too conventional and uninvolving to be memorable.

George S Jan 28, 2018 The only movie account of the Alamo that tells it like it was. Crockett is shown a s a flawed man and he does not go down fighting. The movie goes against all the mythic stereotypes of the majestic Anglo doing down fighting against the savage enemy representing despotism and non white races. It should be given cudos that it portrays the contribution of the Tejano Mexicans, particularly Juan Seguin. To most Texans that is just the name of a town and street signs. My Tejano neigbors did not know what Tejano meant nor that it described them. Nor did they know who Juan Seguin was or than he served in the Texas senate after independence. Texans cherish their myths, at leas since the 1901 when the Alamo was lifted to hallowed status from being the feed storage building of a grocery store. If you want to know how things went down at the Alamo, this is the best depiction. Drawing on the authenticated de la Pena diary written by a Mexican officer who was there. This is not Fess Parker's or John Wayne's David Crockett. He does not go down fighting as the myth would have you think. The movie takes you all the way from the Alamo to San Jacinto, so it does drag in between, but is worth a look. See more
Luke R Jan 19, 2018 This film is depressing. Taking something as iconic as the Alamo and turning it into this sloppy turd is unforgivable.
Leia M Aug 12, 2017 An intense war film with great characters!
Kylo R May 24, 2017 found this to be an enjoyable film, but if you are looking for the Michael Bay type film then this isn't for you. I recommend this movie to anyone that likes historical pieces. See more
Leia G Mar 22, 2015 An average film with a few really memorable scenes. Thornton did a good job acting as David Crockett.
Albus M Jan 18, 2014 Aside from the embarrassingly clichéd, dramatized execution of Davy Crockett - in which Crockett spouted the most ridiculously cheesy one-liners and Hollywood conveniently placed as the last death of the 189 fallen Texians - this whet my whistle for a movie with historical accuracy. I was impressed with the film's ability to convey the meaningfulness of the Battle of the Alamo, which only looks like a lost cause if uninformed about its context. Without this Alamo battle, Texas would be a part of Mexico, and without this Alamo film, its story still would not have been done justice. See more
