What to Know

Critics Consensus

A curious, not always seamless, amalgamation of Kubrick's chilly bleakness and Spielberg's warm-hearted optimism, A.I. is, in a word, fascinating.

Spielberg’s future world is densely detailed and, although the film is tonally inconsistent, this remains one of the director’s most interesting and underrated works. Go to Full Review

A confined domestic drama, a considerable morality tale, a fleeting futuristic noir, a persecution parable, an on-the-nose fairy tale adventure... and then it keeps going. Go to Full Review

Balancing a sentimental outer shell with a deeply cynical core, A.I., even 25 years after its initial release, accurately depicts humanity’s fears in the digital age. Go to Full Review

Steven Spielberg has managed the seemingly impossible: a harmonious marriage of his own brand of glowing optimism and the cynical, alienating style of the late Stanley Kubrick. Go to Full Review

Apr 2, 2019 The pinocchio of modern times. It is a fantastic fable and an insight into the human condition. Magnificent film and excellently directed by Steven Spielberg. Masterpiece. See more
Abraham R Mar 9, 2019 Not nearly as good as it could have been. Just average.
Anakin W Mar 9, 2019 This movie is a trip! Its also one not easy to frequent. The story tries to convey what exactly makes us human. If a soul can be earned and if anything can earn it. Its Pinocchio but with a really sharp edge. It can be dark at times, but like life not every day is sunny. See more
Poe S Mar 9, 2019 Worst AI representation and moral debate. It painful to watch, poorly acted, and a depressing story. It is absolutely the worst.
Jan 26, 2019 The best sci-fi movie ever made! With the best movie score ever composed!
Poe W Jan 17, 2019 Two brilliant minds come together in an unlikely collaboration, with an equally unlikely twist. Kubrick, known for his dark and surreal works of art, displaying raw, if not extreme humanity, had written his final film to be a fairly lighthearted and endearing film; Something akin to a modern-day Pinocchio. Spielberg, known for his family-friendly content and perhaps cliché happy endings, sees Kubrick's vision through to fruition but with some very dark and unexpected tones and ideas explored. The result is a subtly grandiose fairytale mascarading as a modest film about finding purpose and happiness in life. While it hits all of the required tropes of a film of its type/genre, it also takes every chance it gets to delve deeper and deeper into darkness and obscurity. Once you get past the film's mechanical exterior, you will find a truly organic, heart-rending, and thought-provoking work of art. This film is not without its flaws, but it more than makes up for it by being an overall wonderfully executed swansong/tribute. See more
