What to Know

Critics Consensus

Naomi Watts and Robin Wright give it their all, but they can't quite make Adore's trashy, absurd plot believable.

The film never musters the humor nor the sex appeal to carry off its study of ultra-Freudian arrested development. Go to Full Review

With its soap-operatic performances, bonkbuster plotline and sparkling seafront setting, all 'Adore' really lacks is a cameo from Alf Stewart Go to Full Review

Would Fontaine have made this film if the mothers looked like and were as old as Barbra Streisand and Kathy Bates and the sons weren't built like surfers? Of course not. Go to Full Review

Even if they had to jump through some stereotypical hoops, it’s nice to see relationships between older women and younger men taken seriously and given a legitimate future. Go to Full Review

Its Australian title, 'Adoration', sounds as flat on the tongue and unsure of itself as the actual film. Anne Fontaine never finds the right voice for her film's message and ends up with this disappointing, albeit handsomely made, effort. Go to Full Review

Anakin S Nov 12, 2018 This film was unwatchable.
Nov 4, 2018 Nice to see a movie that shows women over 50 with an active sexuality. And all the people criticizing this movie - the male equivalent has been made for years and years and years. 'Bout time we see the reverse! See more
George G Oct 8, 2018 Delicate, excellent actresses and actors, spontaneous and authentic
Theodore L Sep 26, 2018 When a movie so firmly rejects to release on the level of plot, what we are left with is tone. "Adore" is about that being in a place where nobody knows you or wants to know you, and you are thumped by your nothingness. There was a world where it was important that Naomi Watts was Naomi Watts and Robin Wright was Robin Wright. In the ocean among friends, it is not even essential that Lil be Lil and Roz be Roz. Theodore S Sep 6, 2018 Any critic attempting to accuse this of trying to come off as a feminist manifesto says more about the critic than the film. The two female lead characters are clearly hiding the relationships throughout, even leaving the impression with one attempted amorous interloper that they are engaged in a lesbian relationship so he can't intrude on what is going on. They are also intermittently appalled at and ashamed of giving in to their nearly incestuous-tinged desires. It's not a great film nor is it a bad one, I enjoyed it at least two stars worth I mean who can pass up great sex scenes involving Watts and Wright? See more
