There's barely enough time to develop De Ruyter as a character in his own movie, or even successfully explain his war strategies.

Acting is pretty strong. Even the supporting acts are filled by often internationally known actors as Derek de Lint and Rutger Hauer, and Charles Dance shows up as a gleefully evil decadent English King (think Tywin Lannister with French hookers)

Frank Lammers gives a surprisingly understated performance as Michiel de Ruyter. Though he has his moments of fury and agony, his usual countenance is one of weariness and concealment.

Frank Lammers is such an unappealing man. Every time his wife (played by Sanna Langelaar) had to kiss him I wondered if the actress was getting a bonus check because she sure deserved one. So unappealing. Also he's no great shakes as an actor. The rest of the cast outshone him. The aforementioned Langelaar (who still deserves that extra money), Barry Atsma as the doomed-to-be-eaten Johan de Witt, even Egert-Jan Weeber's Wilhelm was a more complex character. I also wasn't very impressed with the filming of the battle scenes. Just a bunch of wood chips being tossed around. The ending was so heavy handed with all the slow motion shots of cannon balls. On the plus side Sanna had some amazing hairstyles I was quite envious of. A tip of the hat to the hairstylist on this work. And the costumes were quite nice.
