What to Know

Critics Consensus

Jim Carrey's twitchy antics and gross-out humor are on full, bombastic display in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, which is great news for fans of his particular brand of comedy but likely unsatisfying for anyone else.

Ace Ventura is puerile, brain-numbing and forgettable. Go to Full Review

Playing a celebrated finder of missing mammals, [Carrey's] so over-energized from the start you keep thinking he'll wear out his welcome pronto; 90 minutes later his lunacy is still hard to take your eyes off. Go to Full Review

Jokes come thick and fast, in the form of snappy dialogue, eccentric behaviour, weird line deliveries, and a near-perpetual stream of film and pop culture references. Go to Full Review

Wacky and absurd, Pet Detective is the perfect stage for Jim Carrey to show off his physical comedy skills. And it's amazing to behold. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

The twist ending is unnecessary and has the unsavory side effect of teaching millions of young Ace fans that it’s unimaginably gross for a man to kiss a trans woman — this from a movie whose hero talks out of his butt. Go to Full Review

Han M Apr 28, 2019 Jim Carrey completely makes it.
Leia W Apr 16, 2019 Another one of Jim Carrey's comedy classics. Funny. Just funny.
Anakin M Mar 22, 2019 Thanks in large part to Jim Carrey's cartoonish physical performance, I think I'll always remember this crime spoof as a Looney Tunes episode! I believe this is his best comedic performance ever. But the humor itself in this movie is, surprisingly, quite witty and clever. In its first act and most of its second act, Tom Shadyac fully embraces the movie's goofiness and absurdity, thus generates some inventive and crafty comedy set pieces out of them. In the second half, everything goes gradually downhill. The plot begins to lose its sharpness little by little, as well as the humor, which ends up relying merely on gross-out gags and low-brow, dirty jokes. The movie also has its slow, and monotonous, parts; but this is not before it has delivered some very big laughs that almost made me choke. (7.5/10) See more
Hagrid S Mar 16, 2019 Really disliked it, setting aside all the controversy, Brie Larson looks like sheâ(TM)s NEVER acted before at all.Every line she says sounds awkward, bland, and doesnâ(TM)t match the tone of any of the scenes, almost as if sheâ(TM)s reading from the script while trying to act it out. Unable to display emotion, whether itâ(TM)s in her voice or in her body language, without it looking staged. Never being able to play the character convincingly. Let alone most of the cast. As for the character herself, she is portrayed to be overpowerful for the antagonists, boring audiences for making a hero that wins all the time with no struggles, showing the capability to get out of traps and situations as if she was never in them to begin with. Greatly lacking character depth, being displayed as a one-dimensional âMary Sueâ? with little to no backstory, human flaws, human struggles, or character growth. All things that are required to make a believable character, almost as if she was a real human (a perfect example being Luke Skywalker or Zuko). Nevertheless the plot is uninteresting and boring since thereâ(TM)s nothing special about it at all, just a typical âwoman saves the dayâ? type of plot. But I will pay my respect to Stan Lee by giving this review a full star. See more
