"Above and Beyond" is a straightforward, rah-rah documentary that shines a light on a group of World War II pilots who were recruited to essentially create the Israeli air force during the Palestine War in 1948.

Though naggingly simplistic in its historical scope, the film offers a fascinating chronicle of the 1948 Arab-Israeli war through the eyes of a daring group of men.

Above and Beyond makes for a solid documentary that would almost certainly be a thriller if told as a narrative because the film shows how a number of Jewish pilots came together in a classic David vs. Goliath tale.

This is a flat-out terrific film that is not ashamed to celebrate heroism and derring-do attitude.

An outstanding documentary which is also beautifully made. I loved the way surviving volunteers told their stories while interwoven with historical and archival footage. The whole event was brought to life in an immediate and palpable way, beautifully illustrated, very suspenseful and profoundly moving.
