What to Know

Critics Consensus

About Last Night will perturb fans of the original stage play by sanding down its pricklier edges, but an amiable cast and sexual frankness make this a pleasantly grounded romantic comedy.

The shocks of recognition are largely absorbed by the standard narrative structure that replaces Mamet's blackouts; the characters, instead of functioning as archetypes, look underwritten, half alive. Go to Full Review

…may not have been a good adaptation of Mamet’s play, but transplanting some of his dialogue made this a hit, by dint of salty dialogue and a frankness about sex that set it apart from the pack even in the incessant rain of horniness that was the 80’s… Go to Full Review

Jan 26, 2019 The best comedy romance movie ever made!
Han S Jul 30, 2018 Maybe it was a mistake to have watched the remake before seeing the original (without ever having read or seen the play that both are based on, either). Beyond how much funnier, raunchier, and more frenetic the more recent version is than this one-reflective of the era's mores as much as anything else, when "sexual perversity" means something, uh, quite different (chicken costumes?) than just Jim Belushi womanizing-what really separates and elevates the newer movie is how it decenters and distributes the narrative emphasis. That is to say, whereas the newer iteration stars in (relatively) equal measure the four leads, entangling their stories so that the viewer is invested in each, here the film is pretty solely focused on Rob Lowe's character, an utterly typical young white male who is too socially awkward to capitalize on his "true" virile masculinity. Yet in this classical fantasy form, the movie also serves to illustrate a very Lacanian sense of subjectivity: On an Imaginary level, this is a romance about two beautiful people seeking to disentangle and realize the (impossibility of a) perfect sexual relationship; yet on a Symbolic level, their struggle is really the story of their social networks, the support they get from their friends, who function in turn as a maternal super-ego and primordial father ideal-ego. In closing the gap between, by sexually bringing together, mother and father, super-ego and id, the ego is magically repaired and overcomes the Oedipal conflict. See more
Ron R Jan 4, 2018 A good relationship drama for fans of talkie movies. Lowe and Moore are the young hot couple discussing therir relationship after a torrid love affair. The two leads lay it all out there to see a lot and it is a a fun watch for fans of 80s movies and better than some recent movies about love verses sex. See more
Sep 29, 2017 The backdrop of mid 80's Chicago is real and the story relatable for folks that were 20 somethings back then. The acting is less than Academy Award caliber but some of the lines from Belushi and Elizabeth Perkins are fantastic. This is a classic must see 80's movie. See more
Theodore W Apr 13, 2017 Pretty good movie. The story takes a bold, yet fairly cliched, approach to the ups and downs of long-term relationships in an unstable time of one's life, and does so with a decent balance of comedy and drama (leaning a little heavier towards the latter), and features stellar performances from its cast, especially Moore and Belushi. Leia W Mar 30, 2017 This movie is a true gem! It's a beautiful love story that really nails what that 1st year of a serious relationship is like. The chemistry of Lowe & Moore is RIDICULOUSLY GOOD!! Best movie I've seen in years! See more
