Conor (Lewis MacDougall) is dealing with far more than other boys his age. His beloved and devoted mother (Felicity Jones) is ill. He has little in common with his imperious grandmother. His father has resettled thousands of miles away. But Conor finds a most unlikely ally when the Monster (Liam Neeson) appears at his bedroom window one night. Ancient, wild, and relentless, the Monster guides Conor on a journey of courage, faith, and truth that powerfully fuses imagination and reality.

Critics Consensus

A Monster Calls deftly balances dark themes and fantastical elements to deliver an engrossing and uncommonly moving entry in the crowded coming-of-age genre.

A Monster Calls is an adaptation of a children's book with a title that makes it sound like a horror movie. Neither of these things should obscure the fact that it's the most mature film of the year -- and one of the most moving.

It's a small, almost delicate film that will richly reward those who connect with it.

If you're in the mood for emotional catharsis, A Monster Calls is one of the weepiest experiences I've had at the theater this year.

I loved A Monster Calls, and the moment I have to deal with tragedy, this is a film I will come back to.

Occasionally janky FX aside, Bayona's film pulls on the heartstrings in the same way Ness' source material does.

J.A. Bayona’s vision of Patrick Ness’ well regarded children’s book is a wild blend of gothic imagination and fairy tale charm, supported most importantly by an innocent look at grieving.

It's well-acted, visually stunning, and surprisingly dark, but it is very, very melodramatic. And Sigourney Weaver's accent was terrible!

A Monster Calls is such a beautiful movie, although a bit more dramatic than I was expecting, beautiful nonetheless. It is a fascinating story with a great buildup and I loved "the monster", he was very wise. It was quite magical (but still very sad). I think the movie carries a great message and I would recommend watching it with a lot of tissues. (I think Felicity Jones was so amazing as Lizzie, perhaps one of her best work. I also think Lewis MacDougall has a great career ahead of him because he was goooood)

Such a shocker, I was really not looking forward to this. I thought it would be a rather pointless kids movie. Couldn't have been more wrong! All the feels!

It's wonderful to know that modern cinema can still come up with gems like this. It's the perfect melding of great story, script, acting and modern technology that all come together in order to tell an extremely powerful modern (and dark) fairytale. I can't go into the plot too much as it's too good to ruin! Suffice to say that if you want to watch a film that tells a story of substance with style and emotional power then this is definitely for you.
