Unfolding like a more intricately plotted installment of "48 Hours," Erik Nelson's "A Gray State" is a genuinely unsettling examination of a 2015 murder case. Go to Full Review
Emily Yoshida New York Magazine/Vulture Nov 8, 2017
Even in its more meandering moments it is a gripping, almost unbearably dark watch. Go to Full Review
Dennis Harvey Variety Nov 4, 2017
This well-crafted doc makes for an absorbingly bizarre footnote. One suspects we are living in a historical epoch that is going to provide many such footnotes for some time to come. Go to Full Review
Michael Atkinson In These Times Dec 13, 2017
Nelson's film is a fairly straightforward police-file-and-talking-heads affair, energized by the use of Crowley's own storehouse of footage, and in essence positing him as a co-director. Go to Full Review

George R Apr 13, 2019 Wow, I've never disagreed more about a 100% rotten tomatoes score. What an unwatchable love letter to narcissism. Oof.
Han M Oct 7, 2018 Very well done documentary which humanely yet fairly handles an extremely delicate, tragic situation
Jul 8, 2018 If I could give this "documentary" a -quadzillion (no, that's not a real number, but you get the idea), I would. This is the most ridiculous and AWFUL representation of what actually happened to the Crowley family. The lies, the misinformation, the twisting of facts is a horrible thing to see. I challenge everyone to actually read the case documents. Explain to me how the bullet that supposedly David killed himself with DOES NOT contain his blood, or ANY tissue? Explain to me why the so-called suicide bullet hole wasn't found until a month later by someone who wasn't supposed to be in the house. Explain to me HOW David could have a blue blanket wrapped around his legs (meaning it is OVER his legs), yet this SAME blanket is UNDER his wife's body? This entire case needs to be re-opened, re-investigated, and called a triple murder. See more
Feb 12, 2018 Scary but it's happening now
Finn S Jan 12, 2018 This is a sad and difficult look into the tragic end of three lives. The movie did flatline a bit and lose steam as it progressed. Yes, David was very intelligent and talented. Unfortunately, it seems, that he slid into mental illness, which is what caused everyone's end. Overall the movie was average at best. I would have like s to have heard from the PD as to what they think happened. See more
Ron P Jan 6, 2018 Shines The Spotlight On Multiple Issues At Once, These Include; Family Violence, The Culture Of Military Might, Narcissism, Depression & PTSD, Children & Rights Of The Child, Gun Culture & The Right-Wing Neo-Lib Factions Of Society. There Are No Clear Answers To Be Found Here, But The Pandora's Box Of Discussion It Opens Is Incredible. The Irony Of The Entire Film Is That It Had Aimed To Open An Entirely Different Door Upon On Other Sections Of Society To Blame For The Problems That Come About Ultimately Via Shining A Light Upon Itself. I Think What I Find Most Disturbing About This Is The 'Knowingly Silent' Factor, Where By-Standers Look On Not Knowing How To Resolve A Clear Darkness Approaching, Avoiding Engagement With Services, Until It's Too Late..Quite Devastating Really. The Dystopian Conspiracy Underlying The Family & Overall Story Simply Adds Salt To A Very Deep Wound. Clearly The Military & Support Of Returning Officers Should Be Reconsidered In Light Of This..Particularly In Respect To How Readily Available Weaponry Is In The United States & The Knowledge Of It's Use. I Don't Know What Else To Sad...Very Sad Situation For All Involved. We Edge Close To This Question In This Film, But There Is Little More Else Explored, So It Is An Opportunity Squandered I Think. Hrmmm...Difficult Material To Resolve Though. See more
