Mad Mary is a delight, especially for its rounded supporting characters, its skewering use of language, and the pinpoint accuracy of its observations of life in this specific time and place.

There are some delightfully unexpected moments - largely stemming from Mary's penchant for jeopardizing or even ruining whatever good things come her way.

A moody score brings the film's sombre tone together - not that this film isn't hilarious when it wants to be. A Date for Mad Mary is a great showcase for some of the best talent coming out of the Emerald Isle.

Kept getting distracted, just may not have been in the mood for a movie, may have to watch again.

On the surface, the plot of this movie is straightforward: Mary, a feisty and somewhat socially-inept girl, is released from prison and comes home to be maid of honor in her best friend's wedding. In actuality, the movie is about relationships and does an excellent job exploring Mary's relationships with men, her best friend who turns out to be pushy and domineering, and with a gentle lesbian photographer who in the end is most sympathetic and kind to Mary. Seana Kerslake does an outstanding job playing the role of Mary.
