The film is inspired by a true story set in 1964 in New York, where several neighbors witness the brutal murder and rape of Kitty Genovese and do not intervene. The film peeks into the lives of three disparate families, the lonely neighbor and the doorman. Viewers connect with the neighbors and understand their decisions not to act by following their day-to-day struggles. They deal with their personal lives the same way they deal with the murder -- if they don't talk about it, it didn't happen.

37 is disturbing for its reported accuracy surrounding the actual death of Genovese, but Grasten doesn't present an effective narrative. It's a slow burn, leading up to a third act that is muffled and lacks power. Go to Full Review

In the face of real-life tragedy, "37" only perpetuates a myth. Go to Full Review

It is a haunting movie, one in its director's total control, full of disturbing ideas and no short amount of magic. Go to Full Review

The notorious 1964 New York City murder of Kitty Genovese is the springboard for this arty but tedious meditation on urban angst. Go to Full Review

Hagrid S Jun 3, 2018 The entire story and point of the movie is lost in the disparate scenes. Broken families, gas masks, strange "could be a psychotic break" scenes, and Ouija boards...the whole point of the movie is lost in these cinematic parcels that have nothing to do with the real events. Kylo L Sep 29, 2017 An indie drama about a fascinating topic: how could 37 people witness the rape and murder of a woman in the streets of New York and not one lift a finger to help her? Especially since some of them knew her personally. This look at "The Bystander Effect," an actual psychological designation, is marred by uneven performances, a slow pace, and what feels like totally fictionalized rationalizations pertaining to motives not to get involved. We don't get to meet all 37, but the few stories that are developed are rather selfish and flimsy. See more
Finn W Mar 3, 2017 Tries too hard and fails. All evidence of grit and drama on the event or the bystanders and their lives within is washed away in ethereal nonsense. This reviewer usually loves lofty and bizarre, but without something inside it comes off as a failed art school film. 37 accomplishes only this. See more
George W Feb 12, 2017 Another whitewashed film.
Draco W Oct 8, 2016 Feels less interested in offering any commentary or adding any substance than in propagating the original myth.
