A radical, free, and gloriously unhinged work that invites us to celebrate the existence of fearless, unprejudiced artists like Danny Boyle and his collaborators.

I suspect Garland and Boyle are most interested in Dr. Kelson. He’s the steadfast pole around which all of Garland’s disparate ideas spin, and Fiennes gives a beautiful and still performance that grounds Boyle’s frenetic tone.

As a visceral action thriller, the first half of the picture is remarkably tense, but it’s the second half where this becomes something really special.

Working with cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, Boyle creates a thrilling and often jolting vision of the apocalypse, showcasing a kind of formal experimentalism that films of this scale rarely attempt these days.

Let’s be honest … this is just another zombie movie. Well made and with a deep pedigree, perhaps, but it’s going to appeal mostly to the already converted.

28 Years Later is a rather curious start of a supposed trilogy in that it does a fine job of establishing its characters, but not so much in terms of giving the film enough substance in regards to its strangely weak narrative.

I wasn’t ready for the slow, crushing force of 28 Years Later, the sensation of being steamrolled like some doomed Austin Powers henchman, flattened by a film that insists on life even as it stages the apocalyptic end of it.

The film explores life and death from an unusually intimate, almost philosophical perspective. It’s a complex look at the human condition, family relationships, and the fragility of community when society no longer exists.
