Critics Consensus

Roland Emmerich's 2012 provides plenty of visual thrills, but lacks a strong enough script to support its massive scope and inflated length.

B

Cusack, with his one-of-the-guys face and his nice way with child actors, does creditable work as an Average American Dad trying to put things right.

2012 is reminiscent of yesteryear '80s shlock-tastic blockbusters -- total popcorn entertainment with ridiculous dialogue and impossible situations and special effects that will boggle the brain for a good two-plus hours.

Everything you’re expecting from 2012 is exactly what you’re going to get…Utterly impossible by any stretch of the imagination, the movie is a cheesy, one-dimensional, epic-sized spectacle that does exactly what it promises to—destroy the Earth.

If you put your brain in neutral, you can enjoy an unprecedented scale of beautifully rendered destruction and learn that science isn't an exact science.

A good disaster thriller must contain both thrills and massive destruction--2012 has both in great quantity.

2012 is an improvement from Roland Emmerich's previous post-Independence Day filmography owing to some stunning and borderline terrifyingly realistic special effects, some surprisingly poignant moments and a dark tone that firmly establishes how much is at stake unlike the Independence Day movies and Godzilla '98 where they treat alien invasions and giant bad CGI iguanas as business as usual. Unfortunately, 2012 also suffers from being way too long, suffering from a bland family that are the protagonists meaning they are easily overshadowed by the other characters, being outdated - some of the nightmare fuel is less nightmarish if you've watched this after December 21, 2012 for obvious reasons - and a clumsy script. Mainly, we're clearly meant to root against Oliver Platt but he makes good points, especially since the protagonists' actions contributed to two completely pointless deaths. Still better than Godzilla '98, 10,000 B.C. - What's with Roland Emmerich's tendency to name his movies after years, anyway? - and Independence Day: Resurgence combined.

Only good part of the movie was Woody Harrelson. I wouldâ(TM)ve given it 5 stars if he got the lead role

An exciting look at the end of the world. Unfortunately lacks the plot to back the visuals up.

Painfully PC... but great effects. Too bad movie was not supported by a semi plausible script w/o cliche (C)-laden agenda.
