What could be more soul-curdling than a Broadway folk operetta featuring the founding fathers, and double-entendres, and national tragedy? The movie version. Go to Full Review

With "1776," political struggles that took place nearly two-and-a-half centuries ago feel as fresh and immediate as the political struggles of today. Go to Full Review

Leia W Apr 13, 2019 I always wag my finger when people say that "Hamilton" is so innovative and original. Oh contrare! Before the founding fathers rapped their way through history, they sang their contribution to history, in 1776. Although it may seem hokey to younger viewers, when I saw it in 1976, I found it charming and spiked my interest in American History. This 1972 screen adaptation of the hit 1969 Broadway play starred most of the actors from the play, which was a plus. They knew their roles inside and out and knew how to play them for the camera. Two exceptipns were Blythe Danner, who did not play Martha Washington on stage. The other, was Donald Madden, who played the role of "antagonist", John Dickinson. Primarily a Shakespearian stage and some time T.V. actor, Mr. Madden, had never done a film before or after. Nevertheless, he was the most interesting and engaging actors in the film by far. If for no other reason, watch the film for his performance and see a true master hone his craft. (The greatest actors are the ones nobody has heard of.) See more
Jan 26, 2019 The best musical movie ever made!
Kylo G Jun 29, 2018 A fun, if a bit unsubstantial and sometimes overly drawn out history lesson with not particularly memorable songs. Quite well done for what it is, but it feels a bit dated now, because comparison to Hamilton is inevitable. The two have overlaps of period, themes, and even some characters. Unfortunately, there's really no comparison, Hamilton blows it out of the water on all fronts. Still, an interesting companion piece that shows the evolution of musicals over the last 40 years, relatively speaking. Also, I'm pretty sure one of Miranda's lyrics was a reference to the opening song of this - always fun to discover things like that. See more
Harry R Jun 21, 2018 A little too long for my taste and I can do without the ,at times off key, singing, but overall a very well done pix.
Harry S Jul 25, 2017 My favorite musical. Witty and engaging.
Finn S Jul 5, 2017 Undoubtedly, the best Fourth of July film ever. The songs are -- for the most part -- unmemorable. The acting varies from good to pedestrian. Cinematography is bland and uninspired. Sets are -- well, early 1970's studio-chic. Costumes are marginally good. Nevertheless, "1776" is captivating and a wonderful, family-friendly history lesson on America's independence journey, with warts and all. See more
