Although the film comes very close to being more than run-of-the-mill horror fodder, too much studio meddling and a shifting tone leave the result uneven. Go to Full Review

Harry R Nov 7, 2018 I would give CARRIER 3.5 stars, and I must say it was a pleasant surprise. It's an interesting post-apocalyptic movie, told with good forward momentum and a minimum of fuss. Although clearly a low-budget film, it seldom feels that way. The cast is very solid, and to be quite honest, I'm not sure why this film didn't get a wide release. (I looked it up, and it was released in a SMALL handful of theaters for one week, and earned all of $92,000.) In brief, we start the film following a group of 4, in a car, heading for the beach. Older brother (Chris Pine) is the slightly wild guy behind the wheel, with his girlfriend (Piper Perabo) next to him. In the back seat is younger brother (Lou Taylor Pucci) and a girl he's met but not in a relationship with (Emily Van Camp). Quickly, it becomes apparent this isn't just happy outing to the beach. We find out soon that they are on their way to the relative safety of the beach, as they outrun a disease that has nearly devastated humanity. It's a simple setup, and hardly a unique story. But the nice, young, able cast, with supporting appearances by other good actors (Christopher Meloni in particular), move through the countryside facing danger and moral dilemmas. The film is really more concerned about the ethical choices these group faces. What do they owe humanity? When life is SO precarious, should they be more helpful or more ruthless. While it's not an action movie, there are certainly plenty of tense scenes. Competently filmed, well edited and just very decent all around. It doesn't really break any new ground in this genre, but it follows many familiar beats in ways that are still interesting and thought-provoking. I recommend the movie, and hope that over time it will find continue to find an audience. (Also, although I didn't know it until I watched it, much of the film was made in and around Albuquerque, my city. I looked at the screen, and there was Highland High School!) One little bit of trivia: there is a largish role played by a young girl. The actress is Kiernan Shipka, who later became Don Draper's daughter in MAD MEN. Funny to see her as a little girl. See more

Harry L Jul 8, 2018 I really loved this movie. Very sad that it didn't get a bigger release. Great cast, great performances. amazing treatment of heavy subject. This is one of those movies i'll remember. Lingered in my mind for weeks. See more
See more
Leia S Mar 31, 2018 Pretty lame road trip story set in a global pandemic. Decent acting, just not much of a story here.
