Tim (Ben Stiller) has a chance to invest in Vaporizer, the latest harebrained venture by his friend Nick (Jack Black). While the details are sketchy, Nick claims it's a chemical that can make any substance disappear. Not expecting Vaporizer to amount to much, Tim declines -- only to watch the product become enormously profitable. While Tim's life falls apart, Nick's gets better, leading to an unspoken tension between the pair, until the mysterious J-Man (Christopher Walken) gets involved.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Jack Black and Ben Stiller fail to wring laughs from a script that's essentially one extended poop joke.

Abraham M Mar 21, 2019 Has a good cast and they do well with a plot that is really strange. The idea of poop disappearing is strange but it is funny and there is some funny elements in the movie. Christopher Walken steals the show in every scene he is in. The film was going to get a straight to DVD release but due to the success of School Of Rock it received a theatrical release but bombed at the box office and Jack Black and Ben Stiller publicly apologized for film during a press conference for Shark Tale. I got laughs out of it and I think Jack Black and Ben Stiller were being hard on themselves because it was a strange comedy but it provides a few laughs and with a plot about poop disappearing what can you possibly expect? Albus L Sep 23, 2018 The rating Rotton Tomatoes gave this comedic masterpiece proves to me how one-dimensional their critics are. Envy is the story of how money can ruin a beautiful friendship. Tim (Ben Stiller) and Nick (Jack Black) are across-the-street neighbors, who do seemingly everything together, even down to their job. They work at 3M, though inventive as they are, they don't quite have an outlet to create. Nick decides to attempt to invent a spray that makes dog poop literally disappear. When this invention works and he sells the patent, Nick becomes a multi-millionaire, yet he doesn't relocate his family. Instead, he builds an empire across the street from Tim's house, complete with an Olympic-sized indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, a [dangerous] Merry-Go-Round (we'll get there), and just about every toy and material object one can fathom. The brilliance of the humor in this movie really comes from Ben Stiller's performance. You watch him slowly suffer watching his best friend live out all of the dreams he ever had, while he watches from his very modest home. Tim, after stuffing down every negative emotion, every ounce of jealousy toward Nick, finally lets out his frustrations in one of the funniest monologues I've seen in a film. And right after he figuratively "explodes", Nick's Merry-Go-Round literally explodes in a hilarious climactic scene. There are moments and comedic nuggets throughout Envy that are so surprising and fresh that I find so inventive. For instance, there's a scene where Tim loses his job at 3M and ends up at the bar, getting drunk in the early afternoon. A homeless-looking man (Christopher Walken) approaches him and they begin an odd friendship that continues throughout the film, taking Nick and his family on an unexpected journey. The "poop jokes" are not anywhere near the heart of the film and I think it takes poor judgement to even view it through that lense. Poop may be a detail in the subject matter, but the heart of the film comes from friendship, love, and the way that envy can truly destroy the way people connect with one another. Like any great film, this one shows heart, lots of laughs and, most importantly, the characters having learned important lessons and experienced growth. See more
Anakin S Sep 19, 2018 Sorry, I cannot rate a movie with J.B. with less then 2 stars.
Aug 20, 2018 Despite the poor ratings i truly enjoyed the slapstick twists in this film.
Abraham S Aug 6, 2017 Good watch. But not really a rewatchable movie.
Abraham R Feb 5, 2017 I laughed a decent amount, but the way the storyline was conveyed (and even the storyline itself) felt a little bland. Most of the drama and humor wasn't well executed. See more
