Critics Consensus

The movie borrows heavily from Risky Business, though Hirsch and Cuthbert are appealing leads.

This is not entirely your average greasy teen movie, and frequently manages to be quite funny, and ambivalent, about vicious competitiveness at US high schools and sickly, sex-saturated modern life. Go to Full Review

Essentially Risky Business for the 21st century, and I don't mean that as a compliment. Go to Full Review

Stalling about an hour in, the movie tries to squeeze way too much juice out of a single premise, ending up at least 20 minutes too long, ploddingly predictable, devoid of any humour and with countless serious lapses in logic and taste. Go to Full Review

Despite the nudity and sexual hi-jinx, Girl Next Door is a creative delight with surprising insight and honesty that will make you laugh, make you smile and most of all, make you feel, all at the same time. Go to Full Review

The writing team of "National Lampoon's Van Wilder" crafted it as a satire about conflicting levels of sexual experience among teens, but fail to connect the significance of erotic pleasure to the emotional demands of budding adults. Go to Full Review

Feb 19, 2019 A low budget film that catches the attention of the public, not by the sexual content but by the backgroun love story which I think its amazing See more
Abraham S Feb 8, 2019 Funny, adult humor heart warming teen-age antic fun!!! The Girl Next Door is not a deep epic film. But it is a film full of young realistic teen antics with story book romance. And also thrown in is some far fetched but realistic funny tales, of a young entrepreneurs wacky idea in the end. Definitely a cult classic. Do not watch with your kids but watch at least once. Draco S Jan 14, 2019 I thought it was great mirage-like comedy romance, with subjects similar to the Iliad and the disappearing wonder/castle theme. The "Girl Next Door" represents the sort-of attainable fantasy of human relations, a dream-like situation that one could only imagine, or strive for, but rarely, if ever, attain. Another great subject is the idea of there being no necessary definite answer or conclusion on how to live, one could be a traditional exploiter, or live a risky life, or one could just go with the flow and enjoy it without placing control over it. The movie seems to be a coming-of-age where an individual realizes the reality of his existence, including fantasy, control, ethics, and relationships. There's a particularly great scene where Filter's "Take A Picture" plays that I'd recommend. Great movie, I disagree with the popular consensus. See more
Anakin S Dec 12, 2018 Slightly above the average in this kind of movies
Nov 22, 2018 This is an underrated classic. On the surface this film can be seen as a raunchy teen comedy. But after multiple viewings I saw a different movie with heart and soul to its core. Yes it borrows from Risky Business but not enough to call it a rip off. The leads have perfect chemistry and I found their scenes to be the best part of the movie. Never the less its a fun, lighthearted film thats easy to watch, but it gives you a deeper connection through the caring direction, appropriate soundtrack and solid casting of its leads. See more
Hagrid W Jul 2, 2018 Never heard of this, but my friend made me watch it and it made me wish I was a teen again with a hot neighbor...lol. If anyone ever forgets how hot Elisha Cuthbert was, this movie is a quick reminder. It was a fun teenage romcom. See more
