A true story about a coach who discovers that it's never too late for dreams to come true. Jim Morris (Dennis Quaid) never made it out of the minor leagues before a shoulder injury ended his pitching career twelve years ago. Critics Consensus

A heart-warming sports flick, The Rookie greatly benefits from understated direction and the emotional honesty Dennis Quaid brings to the role of Jim Morris.

At two-plus hours, The Rookie is a good 20 minutes too long, but for father-son teams waiting eagerly for the umpire's "Play ball!", it's an uplifting season opener. Go to Full Review

Morris ultimately lasted two partial seasons in the majors, and the film's rendering of his minor-league struggle is so enjoyable you want to see more of that and less of the everyday life preceding it. Go to Full Review

Though Hancock traffics in a lot of bogus small-town sentiment, The Rookie exhibits a refreshingly honest understanding of baseball as a job, with long road trips away from home and a workmanlike routine. Go to Full Review

Fathers and sons and baseball. There's no combination like it. The Rookie -- it's a swing -- it's a hit -- it's going, going, gone!!! A grand slam home run. Go to Full Review

As Morris, the reliable Quaid throws heat, delivering smoothly in dramatic scenes and convincingly from the mound. Go to Full Review

Feb 2, 2019 The best inspiring movie ever made!
Hagrid S Oct 10, 2018 So great! Watch every spring before baseball season.
Finn S Mar 26, 2018 One of the best sport's movies to come out of Hollywood in awhile. If not the best.
Rey R Mar 9, 2018 The rookie benefits from John Lee Hancock's restrained direction which prevents it from becoming overly sentimental. The film does fall down in its structure as there is almost no conflict. Everything happens a little too easily to the hero. In the documentary that accompanies the DVD, Morris's mother SAYS that he had a tough journey, though this is not shown in the film. Morris's constant struggles with a shoulder injury in his early playing career are omitted and only mentioned as exposition. Dennis Quaid gives an earnest performance as Jim Morris, although he is too old for the part. Quaid's screen persona of someone who seems to be in constant inner turmoil works here, as it provides the inner conflict the film needs. Quaid is PARTICULARLY good at showing the anxiety and stress of waiting to be called up to play in his first major league game. Rachel Griffiths gives a mostly unsympathetic performance as his wife which lessens some of the film's emotional impact. The remainder of the cast nail their parts however. Overall, an entertaining but flawed feel-good movie. See more
Kylo G Sep 4, 2017 It's a ok movie if you like sports then see this movie
Theodore L Jun 1, 2017 A decent sports movie that often feels predictable and cliche, but still charms.
