What to Know

Critics Consensus

With a reported budget of around 10 million, The Gift is obviously a labor of love for those involved. Unfortunately, the A-list cast can't prevent the movie from becoming a by-the-numbers whodunit with an ending that's all but unsatisfactory.

There's really just one reason to see the Southern freak show that is Sam Raimi's The Gift, and fortunately it's the best reason: to watch the star of the piece. Go to Full Review

A glorious textbook example of a gifted film maker's ability to transform a familiar genre and, thrillingly, to confound our expectations in the process. Go to Full Review

For too much of The Gift, Blanchett is required simply to be sullen or scared. Raimi unwisely withdraws any humour from her character and invests it in a string of daffy supporting players Go to Full Review

Although essentially by-the-numbers stuff, the lack of emphasis on digital effects is refreshing and Reeves's ferocious turn is a real eye-opener. Go to Full Review

Hermione S Feb 24, 2019 With a huge cast of recognizable actors with - frankly - excellent performances all around, it's easy to see what binds this movie together. See more
Albus W Feb 5, 2019 I was surprised by this film. It literally came out of nowhere and blew me away. The first half of The Gift is better than the second. Raimi does not rush the setup. He allows it to unfold gradually, with moody shots of bayous occasionally interrupted by flashes of lightning and claps of thunder so sudden that only the dead won't jump in their seats. The characters are introduced with an equally unhurried precision. In an odd way, the moody atmosphere of The Gift reminded me of Clint Eastwood's Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil. The two movies don't have a lot in common, but there's a similarity in the way they feel - both directors steep their characters and situations in the setting so that the place becomes as forceful a presence as any human being. All the actors are in absolute sublime form especially the lovely Cate Blanchett. See more
Ron M Sep 17, 2017 I consider this a hidden gem of a movie. The final act had me riveted to the screen and Keanu Reeves' performance really surprised me. He was a [insert derogatory term here]. I absolutely loathed his character, which is a compliment. See more
Anakin L Aug 4, 2017 Story about a psychic mother who is asked to solve a murder mystery. Not really that well directed by Raimi. But Cate Blanchett is so good in this as she is pretty much everything that I still liked it. Great performance. See more
Luke R Jan 16, 2008 ReWatching 17 years later. Not as great as I remembered, but decent.
