James Herriot (Simon Ward) is a young and enthusiastic veterinarian who finds a post working as assistant to the more experienced Siegfried Farnon (Anthony Hopkins) in Yorkshire, England. Despite his training, Herriot quickly finds that he still has much to learn about both the duties of a vet and the mores of country life. The locals do not put much faith in him at first, but over time he comes to prove himself, and eventually falls in love with the daughter of a town farmer (Lisa Harrow).

All Creatures Great and Small is so wholesome and warmhearted it makes you want to scream; not on account of these qualities in themselves, but because of the director's inability to give them any more depth or meaning than a television series. Go to Full Review

I got most fun out of Anthony Hopkins as the senior vet. Mr. Hopkins is a devotee of super-charged naturalism, which means that... he will so lard his performance with tics that you are intimidated into believing he can't possibly be acting. Go to Full Review
