What to Know

Critics Consensus

If it can't quite live up to Nabokov's words, Adrian Lyne's Lolita manages to find new emotional notes in this complicated story, thanks in large part to its solid performances.

How does Lyne's Lolita compare with Stanley Kubrick's, back in 1962? It's superior in balance. Go to Full Review

Shorn of Nabokov's language, as it must be, any film of Lolita, even one as adequately made as Lyne's, must seem somewhat gaunt. Go to Full Review

This is an intelligent, faithful reading, suffused with a heady sense of atmosphere of a post war America that's also losing its innocence. Disturbing certainly, but the worst thing you can say is that it's a bit dramatically dull. Go to Full Review

Dominique Swain as Lolita is appropriately sulky and gawky, and she has a sudden, delayed smile which lights up the whole film whenever it appears. Go to Full Review

[VIDEO ESSAY] Although it is considered sacrilege in some circles to say it, Adrian Lyne's 1997 film version of Vladimir Nabokov's often banned 1954 novel is a vast improvement over Stanley Kubrick's beloved 1962 version. Go to Full Review

Leia W Apr 9, 2019 The subject matter is pretty disturbing by today's standards. I know the story is a classic and actually a decent remake of the Kubrick film. I'm sorry, but I have a hard time watching a movie about a grown ass man falling in love with a 14 year old girl. I found the story very slow paced and hard to watch. The ending is pretty silly in my opinion. Just know what you are getting into when watching this film. See more
Apr 4, 2019 La carga sexual que imprimió Lyne merecia su propia fotografia y su propia narrativa. Dominique Swain irradia perversión. See more
Harry S Sep 16, 2018 Adrian Lyne delivers his adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov's contentious novel about the fatal attraction of a middle-aged literature professor for a 12-year-old nymphet with solicitously calibrated empathy and damnation for pedophilia. See more
Han W Sep 5, 2018 Well-directed. Does a good job of not romanticizing the situation. Every pedo should watch this film - it would help scare them straight. The reality portrayed is that it is impossible to be in any kind of meaningful relationship with a 14 year old girl. It's barely possible to be in a meaningful relationship with a grown woman. But that's another discussion. See more
Harry S Aug 20, 2018 way better in any way than the 1962 version.
Han S Aug 17, 2018 Holds Fairly true to the book all things considered, most importantly a movie is going to be mere broad strokes of an extremely thick novel. The book was considered sacrilege when it was first published, thecfirst movie was extremely tame and almost everything regarding their affair was mostly inferred or implied to appease the censors. This 1997 version is certainly more true to the book and truth be told with our return to more puritanical values, in the age of Harvey Weinstein et al, I doubt this movie could ever be made again, at least not for quite some time, not in America anyway. The book was extremely well written, a classic, which was part of its draw, the other part of its draw is obviously the story itself. But that said this movie and movies like it "endless love", "pretty baby", "blue lagoon" are not likely to be made again any time soon. Good film, good pacing, a slight lull in the middle, starts off great and finishes well. As with all art films that deal with a somewhat melancholy story line you've got to be in the mood to see the film. Tommy boy it is not. See more
