Air Force pilots Vic Deakins (John Travolta) and Riley Hale (Christian Slater) are sent on an overnight top-secret mission with two nuclear weapons aboard their aircraft. But, after they are in the air, Deakins changes the plan. He attempts to kill Hale and then steals the weapons with the intent of selling them to terrorists. However, Hale survives the crash and meets up with park ranger Terry Carmichael (Samantha Mathis). Together, Hale and Terry attempt to thwart Deakins' plan.

Critics Consensus

John Woo adds pyrotechnic glaze to John Travolta's hammy performance, but fans may find Broken Arrow to be a dispiritingly disposable English-language entry for the action auteur.

Broken Arrow is beautifully crafted, mindless entertainment–nothing more, but also nothing less.

This is a promising premise, but somehow Broken Arrow never really sinks in its teeth and takes it seriously. Consider, for example, the scene where we discover Travolta is not what he seems. He turns to Slater in the cockpit and... narrows his eyes.

Directed with the keen action instincts Woo brought to The Killer, Hard-Boiled and other cult causes from his career in Hong Kong.

Despite a lot of mayhem taking place on screen, the only memorable component of this ramshackle actioner is Hans Zimmer's score.

It is not perfect but I had a really great time watching it. Travolta is a fun villain, the Park Ranger girl starts out weak but becomes badass by the end of the movie and Slater grows as a character throughout the movie.

In my opinion Christian Slater is an underrated actor who does quite well in this action movie. John Woo did a good directing job and has directed other good films from Face/Off to Mission Impossible 2. John Travolta plays the villain very well and watching it I can see that John Travolta took his performance from this movie and used it in Face/Off

Broken Arrow is a big budget blockbuster film from John Woo starring John Travolta and Christian Slater who are pilots assigned to carry a nuclear weapon when Travolta decides to go rogue. Travolta excels as the bad guy(as also seen in Face Off) and the scenes are over the top in typical Woo fashion. Set pieces aside this is a rudimentary action film one can watch with a few friends. (Good action film starring two charismatic stars).
