Sabrina Fairchild is a chauffeur's daughter who grew up with the wealthy Larrabee family. She always had unreciprocated feelings for David, the family's younger son and playboy. But after returning from Paris, Sabrina has become a glamorous woman who gets David's attention. His older, work-minded brother Linus thinks their courtship is bad for the family business and tries to break them up -- but then he starts to fall for her too.

Critics Consensus

Sydney Pollack's Sabrina doesn't do anything the original didn't do better, but assured direction and a cast of seasoned stars make this a pleasant enough diversion.

There is little reason for a remake of this limp little number, other than for Paramount to congratulate its own past.

Even 40 years ago the material was none too sparkling, though Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and William Holden made it appear so. The present cast are in no position to manufacture fizz.

Julia Ormond’s central performance is a major debit in this agreeable if unexceptional remake of the 1954 Billy Wilder classic.

The new "Sabrina" is an enchanting romantic comedy with the magic of a fairy tale, but also with the poignance of a broken heart.

Fans of the original won't be satisfied, but, by the end, there's no doubt Pollack achieves a sparkle to match the picture's undoubted polish.

The time I have wasted watching this remake is something regrettably I will never get back.

Even with its distinguished lead cast, who manage to provide their fair share of laughs and emotion in this rom-com, the script and pace do leave some magic to be desired.

In 1991's Regarding Henry, Harrison Ford's character was transformed from a heartless man to a loving husband by a bullet to the head. Here, the personality change is similar, but it happens in a more believable fashion, and the motivator -- love -- seems far less contrived. It's not really that difficult to defend Sabrina, despite its numerous faults. Even though it isn't as good as the original 1954 version, this movie, brought to the screen by director Sydney Pollack simply has too much romantic appeal and on-screen chemistry to be dismissed as "just another" in the ever-growing pool of remakes. (worthy remake of a classic).

I've seen the original. It's natural to compare this to the original whether it's great or awful & say "Julia Ormond can imitate but not emulate Audrey Hepburn. No actress can." But while the movie's very so-so, Ormond doesn't even come close to resembling Hepburn.

Harrison Ford and especially Greg Kinnear try their best to bring this remake to life, but in the end Sabrina is a poorly paced snooze that adds nothing to the original (except for a very flat series of sequences of Sabrina in Paris). In addition, it's a story with themes that haven't aged well at all.

Julia Ormond is a pretty lady but who could fill Audrey Hepburn's shoes? I can't figure out why they left out so much of the old movie; the scene in the garage where she tries to gas herself, the scenes in the Paris cooking school, the other hired help reading her letter, etc. David's character is pared down quite a bit. I'd say if you want to see Sabrina watch the original.
