However, she feels that her middle-class husband is holding her back, so she decides to have him murdered. For this, she enlists Jimmy, a high school boy who is enamored with her. Critics Consensus

Smart, funny, and thoroughly well-cast, To Die For takes a sharp - and sadly prescient - stab at dissecting America's obsession with celebrity.

Slant Magazine

In the way it cavorts with teen melodrama, black comedy, and docu-realism to reflect Suzanne’s contradictory masks, To Die For is a comic precursor to Gus Van Sant’s Elephant.

The New Yorker

The film, adapted by Buck Henry from Joyce Maynard’s novel, is smartly structured, but Van Sant’s touch is uncertain: the story’s satirical bite begins to loosen as his camera lingers more and more on the disaffected teen-agers.

Furiously paced and sharply funny, To Die For doesn't try for subtlety; its laughs are delivered with self-consciously heavy hands.

A star-making role for Kidman, who chews every bit of scenery she is in in Gus Van Sant's masterful satire.

Wow this film is absolute shit! I found the narrative, direction and specifically Nicole Kidman's performance completely repellent. Im not even going to go through any of the hows and whys because clearly I'm in the minority. My jaw was truely agasp when reviewing this films ratings. The critics really need to get their heads out of their asses and their tongues out of Nicole Kidman's, for once. I would recommend anyone and everyone to avoid this lazy, unfunny, boring, disturbing, cliché 90's piece of shit. Also consider that critics are not the be all and end all when it comes to understanding quality in cinema, because clearly they aren't being objective in this case.

Movie about a femme fatal who first sleeps with and then coerces two teenage boys into murdering her husband. Story is too simple for its subject. Plenty of other movies that do a better job. Also, Nicole Kidman didn't convince me she was an evil woman, and I usually enjoy her performances.

One of the best satires to come out of the 90's, and probably Nicole Kidman's best performance ever.

Van Sant and crew appear to have had a blast making this film, and I had a blast watching it. The subject matter is very dark and yet it is handled with a very light touch.
