Shortly after their TV show closed its final curtain, the Monkees took to the big screen in this mind-bending experiment in pop art. Proudly without plot, this feature follows band members Peter Tork, Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz and Michael Nesmith on a trippy adventure through 1960s Hollywood, Calif., where they cross paths with such people as Dennis Hopper, Frank Zappa and Jack Nicholson. In a variety of vignettes and musical performances, the daffy antics of the band are on full display.

The clean-cut kids and the created kinetics work up a 'so-what' reaction too soon in the 85-minute stretch seques from war to westerns to desert chases to mad scientist brushes in the Columbia lot. Go to Full Review

Despite obviously dated aspects like clumsy psychedelic effects and some turgid slapstick sequences, the film is still remarkably vital and entertaining. Go to Full Review

... a surreal mix of psychedelia and satire, a loopy twist on their lighthearted TV show with a dark undercurrent squeezed in between genre parodies. Go to Full Review

Abraham S Mar 3, 2019 Hey, hey it's unwatchable.
Kylo W Jan 19, 2019 The Monkees weren't much more than a quartet of goofball musicians and singers, but that kind of low stakes energy is what makes the stream of consciousness, dreamlike narrative enormously fun. See more
Hermione R Nov 18, 2018 Confusing, just a random bits of mish mash, doesnt help that the monkess arent very good actors either.
Hagrid L Jul 18, 2017 Madcap irreverence and goofball antics always characterized the Monkees-the patchwork plotlessness and cheery colors are hardly remarkable here. What's new, however, and what elevates the movie above its adolescent slapstick and disregard for all authority, is the level of self-reflection for the group, their attempt to transcend their manufacturing formula in order to criticize the institutions that underlie them. The results are hardly groundbreaking: The antiwar message is overblown, the music is underwhelming, the psychedelic effects are overdone. Yet the movie works on occasion despite the otherwise heavy-handedness, especially when the Monkees as an identifiable group are pushed aside and something of their free-wheeling energy breaks through, best exemplified in an apparent behind-the-scenes moment of self-criticism (and, here's the rub, its dismissal). Hagrid W Jan 19, 2017 This movie is a-head of it's time. Probably the single most under-rated movie of all time, or at least in the top 5. You don't have to like the Monkees to appreciate this movie, since it has little to do with the TV show. It's a very deep movie, and it makes you think. At times it might look a little silly, but if you think that then you aren't seeing the bigger picture of what they are actually saying, you are just looking at it at face value. Don't do that with this movie. Take nothing for granted. It's an experience. You might have to watch it a second or third time before you get it. See more
Finn L Jan 1, 2008 The Monkees made a movie shortly after the cancellation of their t.v. series The plot was simple....no plot, just several short skits splice together, with songs thrown in. Basically a worth see, time capsule of the late 60's which is shown here. . See more
