When timid bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey) discovers a magical mask containing the spirit of the Norse god Loki, his entire life changes. While wearing the mask, Ipkiss becomes a supernatural playboy exuding charm and confidence which allows him to catch the eye of local nightclub singer Tina Carlyle (Cameron Diaz). Unfortunately, under the mask's influence, Ipkiss also robs a bank, which angers junior crime lord Dorian Tyrell (Peter Greene), whose goons get blamed for the heist.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

It misses perhaps as often as it hits, but Jim Carrey's manic bombast, Cameron Diaz' blowsy appeal, and the film's overall cartoony bombast keep The Mask afloat.

This is two projects, one brilliant, the other mediocre. Go to Full Review

Carrey holds his own with the special effects, and even keeps from being upstaged by Milo, the mighty Jack Russell terrier. Go to Full Review

When his face turns green and his limbs get limber, Carrey's pretty much unstoppable. This cartoon-y creation is an amazing fusion of physical comedy and state-of-the- art cinema illusion. Go to Full Review

Like the mask, the film is a perfect fit -- and a perfect showcase -- for Carrey's substantial talents. Go to Full Review

Utilizing wonderful dual turns from its lead and fantastic Oscar-nominated visual effects, The Mask remains one of Jim Carrey's most fun & wildly entertaining films from when he was at the height of his stardom. Go to Full Review
Douglas Davidson Elements of Madness Nov 10, 2025
Given any thought, the morality of the film is, itself, questionable as it tries to let Ipkiss ride off into the sunset with Tina without paying for crimes he is responsible for regardless of whether he did them while wearing the enchanted mask or not. Go to Full Review

Anakin S Mar 15, 2019 A '90s classic. Strays miles from the source material but delivers a solid fun ride and even kids today love it. Held up well. See more
Rey M Mar 14, 2019 Carrey is excellent as both voluntary push-over Stanley Ipkiss and as his crazy wild-man side as the Mask, the comedy without Carey as the Mask are nothing to write about but overall thanks to the acting and effects that do still hold up today in my view I do occasionally coming back to The Mask. Feb 26, 2019 Wonderful film 10/10 would recomend.
Feb 6, 2019 One of Jim Carrey's most iconic roles. And for good reason, he is great at it. Even after more than 20 years, several scenes are still impossible not to laugh at. Of course it has its problems.... The CGI isn't very good, and some of the jokes and dialogues are sort of offensive. But overall is a good movie. See more
Feb 1, 2019 The best fantasy movie ever made! With the best movie quote ever spoken: "Ooh, somebody stop me!"
Ron S Jan 31, 2019 5/7 Perfect score! In all seriousness though, i have loved this movie my whole life!
