The movie is extremely talky and stagy, and it has a flat, scrubbed look, evenly-lit and little use of shadows or contrast. Even though it's a murder story, it's pretty dull. Go to Full Review

The Bat is generally a pleasurably mystery cheapie, though with a narrative that seems to cut corners and conveniently withhold information for its pat resolution. Go to Full Review

Poe M Feb 24, 2019 Agnes Moorehead stars as a mystery writer living in a rented house where a million dollars in stolen bank securities is hidden. Where is it stashed? Who will find it? And, in a separate storyline, who is the masked serial killer--dubbed the Bat by the media--terrorizing the neighborhood? Once the Bat is unmasked, nothing is ever said about his motives--in fact, they're ignored completely--but this is a darkly funny film, nicely photographed in handsome black-and-white, and Moorehead is a delight. With an equally charming Lenita Lane as Moorehead's maid and chief confidant, and Vincent Price as a greedy doctor. No masterpiece, certainly, but not a bad way to spend an hour-and-a-half, either. George R Feb 19, 2019 A really terrible screenplay and pedestrian direction, but you keep watching because of the camp seriousness of Agnes Moorehead and Vincent Price. Plot? Oh, some rubbish about a masked criminal aka The Bat trying to steal some bonds from an old dark house. Seventy minutes of tosh. See more
Luke S Jun 24, 2018 A decent murder mystery that was not at all what I expected, but it wasn't bad. I would have liked to see more of Vincent Price though as he was the reason I watched this movie. It is also showing its age a little. (First and only viewing - 6/24/2018) See more
Nov 4, 2017 Loved it. Must have been a fun movie for the day
Hermione S Mar 24, 2017 Good horror film. It is definitely underrated. Most of the critics like to ruin good things and leave us with garbage such as A Streetcar Named Desire. See more
Luke P Mar 2, 2011 The local bank has been looted by a man on the inside, and the bank president is on a summer trip "deep in the woods" with his friend (not sure if that was a euphamism). The prez was the one who stole the money and attempts to fake his death, but his friend (Vincent Price) decides to make it real. A wealthy novelist is spending the summer in a mansion rented from the bank president. The president's "friend" returns from the woods to search the mansion for the looted money. A burgler/murderer known only as "The Bat" is prowling the premises for the same reason. Who is "The Bat"? Is it the guy we very early in the movie saw turn on a dear friend an commit cold-blooded murder? This is a murder mystery with some comedy much like the early "old dark house" horror/mystrey flicks. (Well, the reason it is so similar to those early films is that it is a remake of the 1926 movie by the same name and [the better] The Bat Whispers from 1930.) See more
