Critics Consensus

Husbands and Wives is a blistering, emotionally raw snapshot of two marriages self-destructing.

It's strange how sour the results can be; Husbands and Wives takes the same kinds of dancing passions that looped through Hannah and her Sisters, and turns them into a crabby-go-round. Go to Full Review

In a sense, Woody Allen lets himself off the hook by having his character hold back from adultery, and even seem the victim of Mia Farrow's character. But this is not a smug movie, and much the better for it. Go to Full Review

In all respects, this is a full meal, as it deals with the things of life with intelligence, truthful drama and rueful humor. Go to Full Review

Away from the real-world ickiness and judged on its own merits, this is one of Allen's most absorbing efforts, with some well-timed laughs breaking up what proves to be a particular bitter pill of a picture. Go to Full Review

...a hit-and-miss drama that is, for the most part, hardly as interesting or absorbing as Allen has surely intended... Go to Full Review

A shockingly frank look at the dissolution of not just a romantic relationship, but of an artistic partnership. Go to Full Review

Hagrid L Oct 3, 2018 Semi-old Woody flick and a typical one. For me it does not show the best features from the director. It's not especially funny, it's not exciting, it's not tragic or thrilling. It's (probably) giving a very genuine view of marriage as the issues and people involved seem very true. Probably a great film to see for couples that have been dating for ten plus years. Loads of situations to discuss and argue about here. Loads of talking here and the known actors are good ones. That's a must here, It works all right - but it lacks a punch for me, it also feels a bit dated. I like the documentary touch, I like the characters and the great and sinister fights here, but I miss some entertainment. 4.5 out of 10 thunder storms. See more
Poe R Apr 13, 2018 "Gabe: What happened after the honeymoon? Did desire grow or did familiarity make partners want other lovers? Was the notion of ever-deepening romance a myth along with simultaneous orgasm? The only time Rifkin and his wife experienced one was when they were granted their divorce. Maybe in the end, the idea was not to expect too much out of life. " See more
Abraham L Apr 7, 2018 "Husband and Wives," written and directed by Woody Allen, is a picture that is alive, so observant about human psychology and behavior, that looking at the way the characters move and react as well as listening to them speak and be quiet recalls the feelings of reading a novel so immersive, you keep wanting to know more about what happens next even after encountering the final word on the last page. Ron P Nov 10, 2017 Woody Allen's films in my opinion range from tedious and boring to classic and brilliant. Husbands and Wives is one of the worst: a Bergman-like attempt to make a slow-paced study of intimate relationships which comes across as pretentious rather than insightful. The use of a documentary-like hand held camera (at least it looks like it is) apparently in an attempt to add realism I found just added irritation. Chalk this one up to experiment. See more
Abraham R Jul 23, 2017 #WoodyAllenRetro Podcast Project Another clear masterpiece from Woody's filmography - from the handheld camerawork to the reality behind the scenes execution and then of course the dissection of marriage and infidelity with both insight, humour, brashness and raw honesty... it's the superior version of what was accomplished in hannah and her sisters in our book and by god Juliette Lewis gives a great performance BEFORE her more ditzy persona roles that followed... this is a mature look at relationships and further shows woodys innovation.. and maybe even touching on themes that would soon be a bit too close to things in his real life at the time - which actually only made the movie that more relevant!
