Critics Consensus

A wonderfully entertaining thriller within an unusual setting, with Harrison Ford delivering a surprisingly emotive and sympathetic performance.

Witness takes serious stock of the gap in experience and attitude between its protagonist and his caretakers to see what shared essence can be found between them.

The film allows us, in the company of Book, to take a sort of holiday from our normal concerns, to visit other values en touriste , drawing the strengths from a strange and alien tradition without really immersing ourselves in it.

In a Weir film, every little thing is given cosmic significance, an effect achieved here by pouring composer Maurice Jarre's rumbling score over scenes as if it were a thick syrup.

Witness is a thriller done right. It has a unique setting and sympathetic characters, making it memorable and engaging. The cinematography is beautiful, and the setting feels authentic--this shows people truly cared about the film they were making. Look for a shot with Harrison Ford talking to Robert Earl Jones (James Earl Jones's father). I liked seeing Han Solo talking to Darth Vader's father. What kind of convoluted fan theories can come from this?

The whole idea was wonderfully executed, although the action was kept at a minimum, the acting was spectacular, the shared opinions the the audience were supposed to relate to the characters on were just right, and the story itself seems quite an original.

Witness. Very good acting from Harrison Ford to Lukas Haas. Good cinematography from the wide shot to the close ups. Good set design/props from the Amish village to the police station exsept a couple things. Very good characters that you can feel for in a tense situation. Good music to go with all the scenes from the suspenseful scenes to the calm scenes. Very good action from the beginning to the end. Very good suspense. Though it is not a comedy there are still a few laughs throughout. Very good story, and in my opinion the best bits are with the Amish. Over all I give it a 8/10 - worth paying for two tickets

An excellent and intelligent crime drama that handles the unique setting delicately and thoughtfully. Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis are both great and show a range of emotion that helps everything feel more grounded.

Even if it feels like the plot drags for too long in an effort to build a bucolic romance in its second act, this is a engaging thriller that offers a very respectful look at a secluded community, with a suspenseful climax and Harrison Ford in one of his finest performances.
