What to Know

Critics Consensus

Its campy flourishes tend to subdue its dramatic stakes, but The Time Machine brings H.G. Wells' story to life with plenty of sci-fi charm and a colorful sense of visual design.

Parts of it are colorful and imaginative, but the film flattens out toward the end. Go to Full Review

The quaint time machine and Oscar-winning special effects hold one's interest initially, but the overall effect is one of glossy emptiness. Go to Full Review

‘…better than the CGI remake, The Time Machine is a charming movie with a serious point, adored by intricate, imaginative handmade special effects that still impress today….the sci-fi trappings disguise a fierce and precise anti-war message...' Go to Full Review

It has the epic feel that you need, and it hasn't quite gotten to the goofiness of the 60s yet... It's authentic, and I think it strives to be like the book. Go to Full Review

Theodore G Feb 26, 2019 An outstanding adaptation of the classic H.G Wells novel. It is simply marvelous. It's boosted by eye-popping and very colorful effects, especially for the time. The Morlocks effects are also great. No wonder it won an Academy Award for Best Effects. And it is also supported by a good lead performance from Rod Taylor. But this film also evoques provocative questions on philosophy and time and human evolution. It's a very interesting film, and it's definitely an all-time science-fiction classic. A piece of real good work and recommended !! See more

Finn W Apr 30, 2018 Pure escapist science fiction, a wonderful story by H.G. Wells and George Pal. I love it.
Finn P Mar 25, 2018 Extremely entertaining first half of a movie. The way he travels through time and how the technology in 1960 is compared to today is fascinating. However, the second half of this movie, the monster part, sucks horribly bad. See more
Kylo W Mar 1, 2018 Good classic sci-fi!
Anakin S Dec 5, 2017 Good fun, a lot better than the remake and it has aged well.
