Critics Consensus

Grimmer and more terrifying than the 1950s take, John Carpenter's The Thing is a tense sci-fi thriller rife with compelling tension and some remarkable make-up effects.

The Thing is The Thing. It stands as one of the best practical effects horror films of the 80s, which is saying a lot. The story has tension baked in, and John Carpenter sucks every drop of tension out of it. Go to Full Review

Hermione L Apr 21, 2019 The Thing is a well crafted and remarkable take of the '50's classic sci-fi film. The practical effects in this film are absolutely stunning and still hold up today. The movies plot is great and its characters are even better. They are well write, preformed, and are very memorable. This movie will really engage the viewer with everything about it. It will tamper with the viewers emotions and will even make them paranoid. No scenes from this film feel useless and stupid but they all feel just right where they are. The film also has one of the most, if not the most intense scene of all time (this is the blood test scene of course) and it will leave audiences in a sweat. Overall, a wonderfully made and memorable sci-fi horror film that will still leave the viewers feeling sick and paranoid, well done Carpenter. See more
Anakin S Apr 2, 2019 This movie is suspenseful, sad, and creepy all at the same time. Also, it's a rare breed of horror movies where the character's thoughts and actions make sense. See more
