Unemployed and unmotivated Hlynur (Hilmir Snaer Gudnason) is still living with his mother, Berglind (Hanna Maria Karlsdóttir), in a decidedly non-picturesque section of Reykjavik, Iceland, spending his days watching porn and wandering around the city. One drunken night Hlynur sleeps with Lola (Victoria Abril), his mother's vivacious, avowedly lesbian flamenco teacher. Soon afterwards, Berglind announces that she and Lola are lovers and that -- by the way -- Lola is pregnant.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A funny, offbeat romantic comedy about an unlikely tryst with the beautiful Icelandic landscape as a backdrop.

A times as flatly deadpan as Hylner, at others as passionately eccentric as Abril's Lola, 101 Reykjavik is at least dedicatedly unexpected. Go to Full Review

Albus R Jun 19, 2018 Decent little Icelandic comedy-drama. I did not find the main character terribly likable, though. He mostly seemed whiny to me and unsympathetic, but neither was he an object of scorn. Mark this one down as "OK, though it didn't quite work for me" See more
