This is a smooth production of an obvious, though suspenseful murder thriller, ably acted and directed. Mood and pace are well set, and story grips throughout. Go to Full Review

Although its whodunnit aspect is weak, the strong camera angles and cast performance make this a fine film. Go to Full Review

The Spiral Staircase, a murder mystery, knowingly paced by Director Robert Siodmak and shrewdly acted by an expert cast, including Ethel Barrymore, is choice, eerie entertainment. Go to Full Review

Hagrid S Dec 30, 2018 It was a good movie but unfortunately I went in with high expectations and imo the movie fell short of them. I consider it more noir than horror, but I guess back in the 40s this must''ve been a scary noir film. The performances were ok, the problem imo was the plot. It lagged at times and didn't have enough exciting moments. See more
Anakin P Aug 22, 2017 Excellent film!!! So underrated. Great atmospheric film with superb performances and a genuinely surprising ending. See more
Hermione S Mar 12, 2017 This is a classic film-noir from Robert Siodmak who made a few great films. This one is heavily influenced in style by German Expressionism is and very stylistically shot. The story is basically a whodunit and is pretty tense at times. The downside for me is that I didn't love a lot of the performances. Worth a watch for film fans for the style alone though. See more
Finn R Apr 7, 2014 A high water mark for the "woman in peril" genre (with all of its flaws) that is basically just a fulfilled opportunity to try to scare viewers. A serial killer is on the loose, hunting women with disabilities of some kind, and he's apparently made it to the sprawling dark mansion in which Helen (Dorothy McGuire), who has been mute since childhood, is working as a maid for invalid Ethel Barrymore. Sumptuous in its décor and art direction and expert in its camerawork, Robert Siodmak (The Killers, Phantom Lady) uses his noir skills to great spooky effect. Anyone could be the killer (of course) but the pay-off is sort of ho-hum. See more
