Scarecrow

What to Know

Critics Consensus

If its dramatic dressings are a tad threadbare, Scarecrow survives on the strength of its lead performances and Vilmos Zsigmond's cinematography.

The film is strong, in every sense of that word. Go to Full Review

Gene Hackman and Al Pacino are wonderful, flexible, yeasty actors who make even the most trivial dialogue come alive, but their work in Scarecrow is too sophisticated for the film to support. Go to Full Review

"Scarecrow," principally because of the Hackman-Pacino tandem performance, has a kind of soiled, slum-charm... Go to Full Review

Al Pacino and Gene Hackman did not get along during the making of this rambling road picture, though their characters found a certain harmony as castoffs who each gain a partner. Go to Full Review

It offers a pessimistic portrait of the American dream that finds itself on the dirtiest highway, but never finds its rhythm and wastes the dramatic potential of Pacino and Hackman when it tends to park on the roads of banality. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Leia P Apr 11, 2019 Gene Hackman and Al Pacino from their halcyon days as Hollywood royalty, easily chewing scenery between Cali and Pittsburgh as two drifters who form an alliance that slowly changes to friendship. In the spirit of the times it was made (ala Midnight Cowboy) the two are opposites and have lessons both to teach and to learn, neither which neither particularly want. Mesmerizing stuff. And look for Penelope Allen's brief contribution - Best Supporting Actor worthy nod. See more
Draco R Mar 15, 2018 Two loafers hooks up and become great pals. They are out of jobs, money and most materials but they are sticking to their dreams. Meeting old loved ones and opening up a car wash. We follow their trip from place to place, city to city, bar to bar. They talk, fight and fix problems. This is they're struggle. Gene Hackman and Al Pacino are this film. Period. The chemistry, the characters, the words - it's amazing. The film is an all right watch, but without these two amazing actors on the job it would have felt like a drag. Some supporting involments are all right, the pace and small happenings is fine. It looks OK and the total story is working out quite fine. A road(ish) movie and character study, a weaker version of "Midnight Cowboy" that's carried by the mentioned performances. 7 out of 10 lamps. See more
