In this advanced society, most homes have robots that perform everyday menial duties. Every so often, one malfunctions, and Sgt. Jack Ramsay (Tom Selleck), an expert in rogue machines, must deal with it. When he and his new partner, Karen Thompson (Cynthia Rhodes), investigate a robot-involved homicide, they discover strange computer chips. Rather than a malfunction, someone is programming the robots to kill. The police must find whoever is behind the murder before more harm is done.

As exciting as Runaway is in the beginning, the film quickly degenerates into a routine chase picture, freshened only by one of Luthor's gadgets -- heat-seeking bullets that are programmed to strike only a person with a specific body chemistry. Go to Full Review

Lady-cop-robo-fun. Nothing really profound here but who cares? Go to Full Review

This Michael Crichton robotic nightmare is so trite that the story seems lifted from Marvel Comics. Go to Full Review

…a step down from Crichton’s Westworld, although a remake-reboot isn’t the worst idea, if only to improve on a fairly questionable set of physical effects here… Go to Full Review

A wooden, cliched cop movie with the tiniest sliver of a sci-fi twist, Runaway stars Tom Selleck and Cynthia Rhodes and features Gene Simmons, cast against type as a sleazeball. Go to Full Review

Sep 1, 2018 I see a bunch of posts from 2000 and later. Sorry, but if you didn't see this movie in the 1980's than your opinion isn't completely relevant. It is a movie that isnt timeless and uneversal, so what?? I don't want to be an old lady here, but so much has changed in technology. If you are under the age of at least 28, you can't even comprehend the differences in technology . In 1984 most if us didn't even know such a thing as the internet existed, and we certainly didn't have a computer in our homes. This movie was truly futueristic at that time.I'm watching this now for the sake orf nostalgia. However, I did see this in the theaterfor the orignial release at the age of 13 or 14, and as a burgeoning geek, I loved it. The visual effects might not thrill someone used to current technology, but it really was pretty awesome to us geeks at the time. Remember that geekdom as a positive is a pretty recent concept, so a good sci fi movie in 1984 wouldn't always be a box office smash. Mid 40s Geek Woman aka Trillessa See more
Kylo L Mar 25, 2017 Dumb robot movie with awful stiff Gene Simmons
Hermione W Feb 27, 2017 While not my favourite movie...it does have numerous visions to a possible future with our constant reliance on technology. Gene Simmons proved that he isn't an actor...but has a masterful use of an evil grin. For light entertainment...just for entertainment sake...this movie DOES deliver. See more
Theodore M Jan 29, 2017 In the not-too-distant future, people are dependent on robots for daily functions they do themselves today. Selleck is a cop who investigates robots that occasionally malfunction and ends up on the trail of a man who is programming them to kill. Pretty good film. Gene Simmons well cast as the bad guy. Liked Cynthia Rhodes here too. See more
Albus M Jan 1, 2017 I still remember this movie and how much I enjoyed it. The robots from the movie are reality now and I just saw an article today about DARPA succeeded in creating corner turning, bullets that hunt their target. Once again, Crichton proved prescient with technological wonders. See more
