The Poseidon Adventure exemplifies the disaster film done right, going down smoothly with ratcheting tension and a terrific ensemble to give the peril a distressingly human dimension.

Rey G Mar 13, 2019 The Poseidon, an ocean liner larger than the Queens Elizabeth and Mary combined, is charting its course on New Year's Eve. Just after midnight, Captain Harrison (Leslie Nielsen) spots the mother of all tidal waves. It is the last thing that Harrison and practically everyone else onboard sees before drowning -- the Poseidon is turned upside down, with only a handful of survivors. The ten lucky ones -- including Mike Rogo (Ernest Borgnine), Linda Rogo (Stella Stevens), Acres (Roddy McDowall), Belle Rosen (Shelley Winters), and Manny Rosen (Jack Albertson) -- led by no-nonsense minister Frank Scott (Gene Hackman), desperately attempt to climb from the top of the ship (now submerged) to the bottom (now "the top"). The film's theme song, "The Morning After," sung by Maureen McGovern, earned an Oscar. In addition, The Poseidon Adventure received the Special Achievement Award for Special Effects; L.B. Abbott and A.D. Flowers were the recipients. One heck of a film . Melodramatic a tad; but the cast namely Gene Hackmen who performance is riveting. Shelly Winters , Ernest Borgnine , Red Buttons , Pamela Sue Martin ,Carol Lynley , Jack Albertson & Eric Shea are such a fabulous ensemble . There combined talents makes The Poseidon Adventure just gel into one of the greatest "Classic" of disaster movie's ever produced . Feb 2, 2019 The best thrilling movie ever made! With the best movie character ever portrayed: Gene Hackman as Rev. Frank Scott! And the best movie song ever sung: The Morning After! See more
Kylo G Jul 13, 2018 I had seen the 2006 remake, Poseidon, long before I saw the original film. While I had my fun with the remake, it was definitely more about special effects and disaster sequences than it was about story or character development. While The Poseidon Adventure isn't exactly high art, it not only works as a terrific disaster film, but also a decently performed melodrama. The story is quite simple: during a New Year's party, the Poseidon is hit by a freak wave which capsizes the ship. A small group of survivors band together to try and escape the ship by making their way to the stern to an area where the steel is only one-inch thick. Naturally, the journey there will be difficult, not just with the odds and elements stacked against them, but also conflicts with one another, and just trying to stay alive. For a film that came out in 1972, The Poseidon Adventure still boasts impressive visual effects, and handles action sequences quite nicely. It's very intense and thrilling to watch when disaster strikes thanks to the finely crafted disaster sequences. Not only that, but unlike the 2006 remake which was largely bereft of good acting performances (Minus Kurt Russell, of course. Because Kurt Russell is a badass motherfucker), the original film sports talent like Gene Hackman and Ernest Borgnine leading the way, along with other solid performers like Shelley Winters, Jack Albertson (Whom you may remember as Charlie's grandpa in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory), and more. While the script by itself is hammy, it's thanks to these actors who allow the film to rise above it and make for a surprisingly decent melodrama. It's not award-winning by any measure, but they manage to make the drama work. If you enjoy some old school disaster flicks, The Poseidon Adventure proves to be a very solid and enjoyable one at that. See more
Albus M Jul 3, 2018 THE ultimate classic disaster film! Saw this at a young age and left me in a state of wonder that's endured throughout my life. I was too young to realize that I was watching a legend in the making (Gene Hackman) and have been one of his biggest fans ever since. Great cast, great story, great direction! See more
Albus W Jun 1, 2018 Silly disaster movie about a ship that gets turned upside down by a big wave. The acting is what makes me love this movie. Stella Stevens is a favorite, but I love them all. See more
Kylo G Mar 22, 2018 My favorite movie of all time..I was 7 when it first came out and it was the first film I ever sat still through..I was fidgety during the first 20 or so minutes, but when the Tidal wave hit, they had my attention from then on,and I have been a movie fanatic ever since. See more
