After World War III, Australia is the only remaining haven for mankind. However, wind currents carrying lingering radiation all but condemn those on the continent to the same fate suffered by the rest of the world. When the survivors receive a strange signal from San Diego, Cmdr. Dwight Towers (Gregory Peck) must undertake a mission with Lt. Peter Holmes (Anthony Perkins) to see if there is hope for humanity -- leaving behind Moira (Ava Gardner) and Mary (Donna Anderson), the women they love.

George S Feb 10, 2019 Great cast, but this dismal end-of-the-world story can leave you feeling sad. That is, unless you can laugh at the nonsense that makes up the story-line and chuckle at the silly melodramatic scenes of this otherwise depressing story. It makes it easier to laugh, when one has outlived the prediction that the nuclear arms race would end with every nuclear nation deploying their weapons and making life on Earth uninhabitable. The only defense of civilization from bad guys with guns is good guys with guns. Thank God for the USA. See more
Feb 2, 2019 The best movie ever made!
Draco R Nov 19, 2018 Spoiler alert - EVERYBODY DIES.
Anakin R Oct 29, 2018 Though nicely photographed and well-acted, this is a doomsday film that is more talky, melodramatic and numbing than imaginative. See more
Abraham W Aug 19, 2018 A film that did not do well in it's time. However, it is somewhat prophetic considering the situation human beings are up against with climate change. As a general rule, movies that end tragically never do well simply because humanity wants its ego stroked. And a movie about the extinction of humanity and civilization is no way to stroke a person's ego. Near the end two officers, with drinks in hand, knowing that the end is near, toast with "to a blind, blind world." For those of you who prefer action movies, this is not for you. But if you a little search in what it may mean to be human, this film may do the trick. See more
Albus W Jan 28, 2018 Good atmospherics at times with some memorable scenes that have a powerful impact. But it is also tediously slow moving and too dated for much of the film to leave the same sense of dread that it probably did in 1959. See more
