More than any of the English-speaking film men, Hitchcock is a one-man show, getting every detail straight in his head and the way he wants it before the first camera starts rolling. Go to Full Review

[The Lady Vanishes] snuck some political criticism past censors by creating characters that exemplified different approaches to crisis, from appeasement to isolation to risking yourself for a righteous cause. Go to Full Review

George S Apr 26, 2019 Perhaps the most ludicrous of all the classic Hitchcock Macguffin plot lines, this is not a script that really stands up to scrutiny. What it is though, is clever, funny and really good fun. The second half on the train in particular is brilliant, one of Hitchcock's real early gems. See more
Finn R Apr 14, 2019 Above average mystery from the master of suspense - Alfred Hitchcock. The film comes off a little dated eighty year later, yet it still presents an intriguing story of two English women (Lockwood and Whitty) who meet at an Alpine resort (or is it the Balkans?), board the same train and then the older one disappears. The younger woman is then flummoxed in convincing other that the older woman was on board. Great set-up with mystery and intrigue that then ends in a dramatic showdown. Great cast lead by Lockwood, Redgrave and Whitty with fabulous supporting actors. Dialogue is crisp and witty, without being glib. The scenes on the train are well done, very realistic. Even the model used at the beginning and certain points add to the overall charm of the film. Also, a rare instance where a shoot out scenes bears some semblance to how it might actually happen with shooters from both sides being hit and wounded. "The Lady Vanishes" is well worth seeing. Poe R Apr 9, 2019 Movie is good, but is no thriller. The entire plot stumbles out at the end. There is no pacing or deliberation as you would expect from a seasoned director. The actors played their parts well. The director, while building his PR machine and chasing the girls, does little to direct this film. Good direction would have made this film so much better. Hermione G Mar 10, 2019 Very similar in plot to Agatha Christie's 4:30 from Paddington. Fun exploration of character motives. Well shot. Cool little model village at the beginning complete with a driverless truck. See more
Anakin R Oct 27, 2018 The last British film from legendary director Alfred Hitchcock before he earned a well deserved and ultimately successful Hollywood contract. Hitchcock films are more often than not suspense thrillers in an enclosed environment involving an innocent person, a romantic side story mixed with some comedic elements, an espionage side story and some pushing of technology available at the time. The Lady Vanishes has all these elements. It is set in the enclosed space of a cross Europe train journey where a passenger mysteriously goes missing (Miss Froy) and a younger character Iris tries to find her. The romantic relationship is provided when the engaged Iris enlists the help of a musicologist Gilbert in her search for Froy who she suspects is involved in some foul play. The train journey is part filmed using miniatures. The comedy element is provided by a couple of eccentric male characters on the train rushing back to Manchester (why?) for an England test cricket game. The characters being called Charters and Caldicott who even got their own spin off films (not directed by Hitchcock). Mrs. Froy is involved in British Government espionage in a pre Second World War environment that involves borders and a pacifist passenger. A nod to pacifism to the danger of Nazi Germany? The film although extremely dated in some areas keeps you glued to its outcome unlike many modern day films. The film is also an obvious template for forgettable modern day films like Flightplan (Jodie Foster, Sean Bean). Hitchcock films are the real deal and deserve viewing every now and then. Legend. George G Oct 9, 2018 If a 1938 film can keep your attention in 2018, it must be a damn good film. Alfred Hitchcock at his best.
