Critics Consensus

A sterling cast gives Shakespeare's tale of betrayal and reprisals body and fine form, with Marlon Brando displaying a galvanizing command over the Bard's language.

..."Julius Caesar" is a story as grandly eloquent as it is exciting and that Shakespeare's own powerful, polished dialogue is delivered by actors who give every word a devoted articulation which has been all too rare in many a stage performance. Go to Full Review

Perfectly adequete portrayal of Shakespere's artefact which is held together well by Brando and co. Go to Full Review

[Hollywood] has squared up to the Bard and has shown that it needs none of those audience sops that some previous producers have considered necessary to make Shakespeare not only completely palatable entertainment, but exciting entertainment as well. Go to Full Review

From the point of view of spectacle, entertainment, beautifully spoken English, and authenticity in detail and educational value, Julius Caesar, the film, is a winnder and a must. Go to Full Review

This is a brilliant film from the tragedy by Shakespeare, whose eternally modern spirit has never been revealed to the filmgoing public in drama of such modern speed, urgency, and intensity. Go to Full Review

What we see of the fighting is kind of aimless and confused... But the show as a whole is the best, most convincing, coherent and sensibly motivated "Julius Caesar" I've ever seen. Go to Full Review

Feb 1, 2019 The best epic movie ever made!
Draco R Aug 16, 2018 obviously well-acted, but I'd like to see a remake in modern language
Hagrid G Jul 14, 2018 A very good adaptation of the classic play 'Julius Caesar'. It, probably, could have been made on a more grand scale, but, as it is, it is still a a solid production with many scenes true to the spirit of the play. And Brando's Antonius is a gem of this film, his is so passionate; his speech to the crowd is full of raw emotions, brought to us by his 100% commitment to his raw style of acting. See more
Albus S Jun 17, 2018 A quick blitz through Julius Caesar. Julius Caesar is political treachery plotted out by Brutus and Cassius, played brilliantly by James Mason and John Gielgud respectively, that will rouse the spirit and entertain all Shakespeare fans. It maintains the integrity and thoughtfulness of the play, while conveying deeper emotions thanks to the expressive performances. Marlon Brando is so emotive in his consecutive speeches in the second half. Meanwhile, Mason and Gielgud give passionate performances that carry Julius Caesar for a majority of the run time. The music is triumphant and the direction is peerless. You get many neat musical cues that fit the atmosphere. The cinematography gives you long still shots for monologues, slow panning shots for Cassius' aside, a grand wide shot for Marc Antony's speech, and many more highly inventive camera choices that engage like no other adaptation of Julius Caesar. This is the best film version of Julius Caesar! See more
Ron R Oct 14, 2017 In this movie, you have the world's greatest playwright (Shakespeare) combined with one of the world's greatest actors (Brando), two other fantastic talents (Mason and Gielgud), and a compelling historical tale (the assassination of Julius Caesar and resulting civil war). On paper, this should be an extraordinary film. And I have to say, the scenes with Brando right after the assassination are compelling (the one in private ending with him raging "Cry 'Havoc!'", and of course the address to the crowd), even if he slips on a word or two. Watch it primarily for those, because the rest of the film, while erudite and worth watching, just doesn't translate as well. I disliked Louis Calhern as Caesar as he didn't have the right bearing or presence. Director Mankiewicz is faithful, perhaps too faithful, to the original, though adapting the play may have been a damned if you do, damned if you don't type situation. Regardless, there are elements that shine with Shakespeare's beautiful words, and there are other elements that fall flat. See more
Rey S Aug 6, 2017 Brando brilliantly delivers the great monologue but even with Mason, Gielgud and Calhern carrying their own weight, the film, outside the acting, is mostly flat. See more
