The original inspirational-teacher story, and a beloved valentine to classical education, tradition, and the English public boarding schools of a bygone era. Go to Full Review

Donat does a decent job (particularly with the transitions into different ages), but the script paints his persona as a caricature, not a well-developed, endearing mentor whose impact reverberates through the lives and accomplishments of his graduates. Go to Full Review

This welcome, warm-hearted, humanitarian work was beautifully filmed in England by MGM and is a fine example of that great studio at its peak. Go to Full Review

This earned Robert Donat the Oscar for Best Actor -- a significant victory considering his competition included Gone With the Wind’s Clark Gable, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington’s James Stewart, and Wuthering Heights’ Laurence Olivier. Go to Full Review

The basic heart behind "Goodbye Mr. Chips" really resonates. We need teachers who care about their students and care about the institution of learning. Go to Full Review

Feb 1, 2019 The best, GREATEST inspiring romance movie ever made! With the best movie character ever portrayed: Robert Donat as Charles Chipping! See more
Kylo L Mar 18, 2018 Donat is AMAZING as a school master who ages and humanizes over the course of his long life. He deserved the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1939, a tough year in that category! See more
Ron P Feb 26, 2018 A very humanistic picture, like the Latin literature itself. The triumph of love to the human kind is Robert Donat's Mr. Chipping, a soft and shy teacher of Latin. In my opinion one who has dipped one's toes into Latin will stay forever a humanist. Mr. Chips' acknowledgment of casualties of war on both sides is a truly astounding scene of the film. The performance by Robert Donat is son nuanced, it deserved every gram of the Oscar statuette. The film unfolds before us a canvas of European history that spans almost seven decades and it's a very pleasant trip alongside the winsome characters of the supporting cast of which the character of Greer Garson is indeed a delightful surprise. Poe S Sep 22, 2017 I shall always remember you. "Haec olim meminisse iuvabit."
Leia W May 23, 2017 Arguably the greatest movie I have ever seen! To think the simple story of a professor's life would be more glorious than a big budget epic story of good vs evil! If you love and view film as an art form, watch this movie, because it is the true embodiment of artistic cinema! See more
Albus S Aug 9, 2010 It's hard to make episodic films of this sort terribly dramatic. I was disappointed.
