What truth it contains has been thrown into the highest possible relief by the skill of Mr. Lewis Milestone, who has made excellent use of the material offered to him. Go to Full Review

Both Menjou as Walter Burns and Pat O’Brien as Hildy Johnson do spectacular work and Mae Clarke, who got grapefruited by James Cagney in The Public Enemy, superbly attacks all her moments as the much-maligned Molly Malloy. Go to Full Review

The Front Page is a strong film because of Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur's source material but it's also a lesser film because of His Girl Friday. Go to Full Review

Is this the stuff of comedy? It is in the hands of Hecht and MacArthur, former newspapermen with plenty to say about the cutthroat tactics of journalists. Go to Full Review

Harry L Feb 9, 2019 Too much outright bigotry, to the extent of calling black children "pickaninnies". This one is also off the charts with prejudice against women and a blatant disregard of anyone who is not white, male, and twenty-one, as they so often say. See more
Jan 26, 2019 The best comedy movie ever made!
Theodore R Aug 12, 2018 The Front Page has an uninspired look to it, it's not particularly funny and it's way too fast paced with too much yelling and talking, but it's still a pretty solid Best Picture nominee with memorable turns from Adolphe Menjou and Pat O'Brien who share some wonderful interactions, some very good scenes here and there and a particularly effective journalism plot which is even more relevant now than it was back in 1931. George R Jul 28, 2018 Classic but dated film that is an important relic of pre-regulation Hollywood but pales in comparison to it's superior remake, "His Girl Friday". The cast is solid, spitting out the rapid fire dialogue splendidly, though not quite as good as Cary Grant & Rosalind Russell did. The standout is Adolpe Menjou as Walter Owens, the shady editor who can turn on you in a second. Behind the camera, Lewis Milestone keeps the film moving, though drags a bit (it's actually longer than "His Girl Friday", despite having a simpler plot). Of course, the missing element is having Hildy as a man (though nicely played Pat O'Brien) instead of being a woman, thus the romantic subplot is missed. Overall, a film worth watching, especially when put next to it's remake, but "His Girl Friday" is the clearly superior movie. See more
Anakin G May 14, 2018 A popular go-to humor story about the untrustworthiness of the fourth estate gets a fair send-off here as a unscrupulous newspaper editor (Menjou, slick and underappreciated) uses a current hot story to try to get his best reporter (O'Brien, decent enough) from leaving the game. The dialogue is the thing with this tale, so hold onto your chair as it comes pretty rapidly. The director, Milestone, is not afraid to use the best tech of the times either. This would be a respected old timey piece were it not for the 1940's reboot. See more
Harry L Feb 12, 2018 Strong adaptation of the hit stage play - a Milestone in film making, which would have been the definitive screen version if it hadn't been for that Girl Friday. E.E. Horton nearly steals several scenes - as usual. See more
