When scientist Andre Delambre (Al Hedison) tests his matter transporter on himself, an errant housefly makes its way into the transportation chamber, and things go horribly wrong. As a result, Delambre's head and arm are now that of the insect. Slowly losing himself to the fly, Delambre turns to his wife, Helene (Patricia Owens), for help. But when tragedy strikes, Delambre's brother (Vincent Price) and Inspector Charas (Herbert Marshall) are forced to pick up the investigation.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Deliciouly funny to some and eerily presicient to others, The Fly walks a fine line between shlocky fun and unnerving nature parable.

Background music is used effectively and the camera's shots of the man-fly are startling. For true horror, catch The Fly. Go to Full Review

The Fly is a study in how the boldness of new discoveries is compromised by science's need for precision, but it's also a nightmarish tale of a comfortable little family, and a nagging little buzz. Go to Full Review

One strong factor of the picture is its unusual believability. Go to Full Review

This is no match for the superior David Cronenberg remake, but it's still a slick slice of absurdist 1950s sci-fi in its own right. Go to Full Review

THE FLY (1958) is a film that surprised even its producers. I would contend that the reason this film had the impact that it did is that it really is very much an archetypal story, an "Oedipus Rex" for the scientific age. Go to Full Review

Like the very best monster movies, the creature itself isn't revealed until very late into the picture. Go to Full Review

Feb 1, 2019 The best thrilling movie ever made! With the best movie quote ever spoken: "Help me! Help me!"
Rey S Jan 16, 2019 A true classic of sci-fi horror.
Harry S Jan 10, 2019 In my opinion one of the 50's best films; this Fly is a haunting lesson on trying to discover things thru science and inventions but not properly releasing the consequences can lead someone into great tragedy. While Price gets the top billing David Hedison owns the film as does Patricia Owens in one of the strongest and best female performances in a horror film period she goes thru utter hell trying to save her husband and failing. She is ultimately saving her life and her son's from the monster that came out of Andre. The end is very realisitic too (minus the infamous help me scene,) Andre's bro has to admit to his son that his dad failed meaning the best and tells him the moral: nothing is better in life than pursing things for the common good; however one must be ready to deal with it's consequences... Anakin S Dec 30, 2018 It was good but not nearly as good as the 80s remake. Instead of focusing on the process of the transformation, the original focused on finding the fly (which was a bit ridiculous). Vincent Price was amazing as usual. See more
Ron W Oct 14, 2017 This is a film that I was pleased to finally cross off the List Of Shame when I went down a rabbit hole of Vincent Price films recently. The film is a bit more melodrama than I was expecting, but for the time period, I dug the crisp B & W photography and being able to finally see a thousand things I've seen used in parody over the years in the original context within this film. Well worth a look if you haven't had the opportunity. See more
Draco W Aug 28, 2017 The remake was good but the original movie is a near perfect blend of science fiction and horror. Masterful!
