The ultimate '80s Schwarzenegger movie, replete with a threadbare plot, outsized action, and endless one-liners.

Comic book stuff, helped out by the presence of Rae Dawn Chong as an airline stewardess whose sarcastic commentary adds some comic counterpoint to the deliberately overscaled action. Go to Full Review

Chong lights up the film like a firefly, Schwarzenegger delivers a certain light touch of his own, [and] the result is palatable action comics. Go to Full Review

Lots of machine-gunfire, explosions and disposable khaki-clad extras, as you'd expect. Go to Full Review

The breakneck pace of action is enhanced by Schwarzenegger's wooden performance which turns it into hilarious comedy. Go to Full Review

It’s pure popcorn entertainment that fans love for its artery-clogging cheese just as much as its wild over-the-top action. Go to Full Review

Apr 8, 2019 My fave Arnie movie by FAR, incredible action, fun with lots of great one liners & corny jokes. The best popcorn action movie ever! See more
George M Mar 4, 2019 They f*cked with the wrong guy. Classic trope of "my loved one got kidnapped, but I'm a retired dude who whoops ass".
Poe S Feb 25, 2019 Very simple plot but amazing action film. A no brainer, just bring the popcorn and put your brain off. But it's worth it. This is my favorite movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger in it. Throughout the movie, you wonder who the hell would mess with this guy, I certainly wouldn't lol. Some humor very will timed à la Arnold right before the killing blows. I've watched this movie probably over 20 times and it's rewatch value has not diminished yet for me. See more
Hagrid L Feb 1, 2019 so awesome...the action, the one liners...just everything!
Han S Jan 23, 2019 The daughter of ex-army colonel John Matrix has been kidnapped in a plot to force Matrix to assassinate a third world leader. Now, Matrix has eleven hours to get his daughter back before the bad guys realize he's not playing by their rules. Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in a string of action films in the Eighties, dominating the box office with his bulging biceps and questionable grasp of the English language. This was one of the more palatable of his action-oriented excursions, although it can be hard to understand why. There's a character in this particular film who watches Schwarzenegger exchange verbal witticisms with Bill Duke as they fight their way through a hotel room (or two) and exclaims "I can't believe this macho bullshit." I always thought that was an exemplary summation of the entire action genre of the Eighties. Unrealistic scenarios coupled with impossible feats of strength, mindless brutality favored over reasoned solutions (Matrix's assault on Arius's island seems like a precursor to the torture porn violence of the "Saw" and "Hostel" franchises from last decade), mindless ancillary characters who couldn't find their rear ends with both hands, inappropriate sound effects (does inflicting knife wounds really sound like the tearing of paper?), thinly veiled homoerotic subtexts, one-dimensional heroes with their less-than-one-dimensional villainous counterparts, and catchphrases so laughably bad they would make Roger Moore's incarnation of James Bond cringe from embarrassment. Seriously, Alyssa Milano (as Schwarzenegger's daughter) comes off as the most intelligent character in this film and she was only thirteen! Overall, it's clunky and ridiculous and garish and completely out of the realm of believability and yet there's something about super cheese such as "Commando" that keeps drawing audiences (including me) back time and time again. Is it simply in our nature to kill, kill, kill and admire those who do? Have we desensitized ourselves to the value of human life so deeply that we can laugh at and cheer on the violence we find in a picture such as this one? Perhaps we're not as evolved as we like to think we are . . . or perhaps we just realize we can't be serious all the time and need to give ourselves license to enjoy a little overblown escapist nonsense once in a while. I'll save that for the psychologists and the philosophers to debate. All I know is I enjoyed "Commando" when I was young and still enjoy it today . . . so it obviously did something right! See more
George S Jan 2, 2019 Even after a few noticeable editing errors, it's a fun "Arnold" movie.
