Beautiful Marguerite Gautier (Greta Garbo) lifts herself out of her poverty-stricken upbringing by becoming the enchanting "Lady of the Camellias," well-kept courtesan of the rich and influential Baron de Varville (Henry Daniell). When young Armand (Robert Taylor) falls in love with Marguerite, his sincere adoration causes her to question her comfortable life, and, despite the protests of Armand's scandal-wary father (Lionel Barrymore), she considers leaving the Baron for him.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Greta Garbo breathes life into this familiar story and reinvigorates audiences with this new version of Camille while writer Zoe Akins and director George Cukor mine the Dumas classic for all its romantic, Paris-set gold.

The picture belongs to Miss Garbo, whose sustained, intelligent, completely fresh, and touching performance in a role beset with innumerable pitfalls once more sets her upon the sparsely peopled heights. Go to Full Review

George Cukor has long been tagged a "woman’s director," and his elevation here of the actress from mere mortal to silver screen goddess is an example why. Go to Full Review

There should be lengthy tributes to Mr. George Cukor for his sensitive direction, to Miss Laura Hope Crews for her excellent work as an aging courtesan, to Henry Daniell for his chill, forbidding baron, and to Lionel Barrymore for his grand moment. Go to Full Review

Finn S Mar 23, 2019 Camille is one greatest classic romantic drama movie of all times.
Rey P Dec 5, 2017 Gorgeous film with unique Greta Garbo in the lead role as the sick, extravagant and doomed Marguerite. I haven't read the novel but I feel this adaptation is good and rich. There are no obvious inconsistencies which is the case of most movie adaptations since they have to cut large portions of novels in order to fit into the allotted screen time. The whole film is like one great sadness, and it gets more sad and somber as it progresses until the final heart-breaking scene. See more
Leia M Dec 2, 2012 I can only handle so much Robert Taylor.
