Critics Consensus

Thanks in large part to its cast, and Anthony Hopkins in particular, The Bounty's retelling of the mutiny on the HMS Bounty is an intelligent, engaging adventure saga.

An intelligent, firstrate, revisionist telling of the famous tale of Fletcher Christian's mutiny against Captain Bligh. Go to Full Review

It's all a brave try, though Gibson is perhaps not up to the demands of a Christian's progress from naive rating to self-loathing exile, and Donaldson's direction often verges on the stolid. Go to Full Review

For a film that tries so hard to follow a 'mass appeal' format, The Bounty fails to consolidate properly each of the formula's ingredients to offer anything special or memorable to the audience it is so eager to capture. Go to Full Review

Feb 21, 2019 The bounty is a really good film. I have watched it for the first time and it was really good. Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins have amazing performances. Itâ(TM)s a great unique story about these men sailing on this big ship back from the old generations and getting into a lot of trouble. Very good movie. See more
Hermione W Nov 19, 2018 The Bounty is a very good film that shows the plight of the mutineers of the HMS Bounty against Captain William Bligh. The film is filled with faces- Anthony Hopkins plays the Captain, a dashingly young Mel Gibson is Fletcher Christian- key conspirator and other faces such as a young Daniel Day Lewis and Liam Neeson as well as Laurence Olivier. The cinematography is stunning, and Roger Donaldson deftly directs such actors, not to mention shooting the ship sequences- strange that he never really became a household name. Go watch the Bounty to relive a great book. See more
Hagrid R Sep 27, 2018 The Bounty by Roger Donaldson is a rousing sea adventure with some fascinating character study and great acting. Anthony Hopkins portrays William Bligh who in real life was a subordinate of James Cook and later the master of the Bounty upon which the famous mutiny occurred. The cinematography is lush and the pacing efficient to say the least. The actors here are, apart from the aforementioned Hopkins- Mel Gibson, Liam Neeson, Daniel Day Lewis and in a cameo of sorts Laurence Olivier, so you can imagine the star wattage on display. All in all this is a great film for sea enthusiasts, history buffs or fans of the actors. See more
Luke W Sep 18, 2018 Consisting of a cast filled with thespians and newcomers who would go on to shine on their own later The Bounty is a rousing sea story made all the more astonishing by the fact that it actually happened. Anthony Hopkins, Mel Gibson, Daniel Day Lewis and Liam Neeson star in this unforgettable tale of treachery on the high seas. Despite being well over three decades old The Bounty has lost none of its impact. See more

Anakin L Jul 23, 2018 The imdb synopsis of Roger Donaldson's The Bounty goes something like this: Fed up with their captain's harsh discipline, a sailing ship crew decides to take action. Well, this sort of makes the point clear, however this feature film is so much more. Consisting of a cast filled with thespians and newcomers who would go on to shine on their own later The Bounty is a rousing sea story made all the more astonishing by the fact that it actually happened.
