In an effort to make Billie more socially acceptable, Harry hires journalist Paul Verrall (William Holden) to smarten her up -- and sparks soon fly between the pair.

Critics Consensus

Marrying screwball romance with political satire, Born Yesterday is a substantive romp with a ferociously smart performance by Judy Holliday as an uncouth bombshell.

Bound to be a smash hit both for the expert fun of the dialogue and for the marvelously comic characterizations given by Judy Holliday and Broderick Crawford. Go to Full Review

George Cukor's direction apparently has deliberately allowed waiting periods for audience laughter after some of Miss Holliday's best lines, the first time to my knowledge this has been done on screen. Go to Full Review

Thanks largely to a small, very blonde and very deft actress named Judy Holliday, Garson Kanin's famous comedy, Born Yesterday, is now a brilliant movie. Go to Full Review

Judy Holliday delivers a wonderful performance and perhaps might have deserved that Oscar in a less competitive year.. Go to Full Review

Hermione L Jan 1, 2019 Both Holden and Holliday are great (no surprises there) but it's also a little too self important for what is a pretty silly plot.
Abraham R Feb 22, 2018 Just one of the bests films ever. Each actor in each scene is great.
Poe G Jul 1, 2017 I understand that Judy Holliday is playing a character but it took a long time to warm up to her with her very annoying voice. Outside of that she did her part very well and the film addresses some really important issues. When people want you to feel bigger than you they will try to stifle any attempt that may make them feel inferior, and this is seen in the interactions between the Brock and Emma characters. It's a much too common form of abuse that helps to keep the one that is not in control unable to escape the control of the abuser. I loved the progression of the film and it's ideas about educating the public and even someone others might find too far gone to help, despite the film's mistake in thinking that America is a democracy. Similar to Mr. Smith Goes to Washington the film uses the monuments of our nation's capital to drive home it's message of anti-lobbying and shaming corruption in government. People need to educate themselves on the issues and vote; it serves no purpose to remain ignorant and complain about how your life sucks. However, as Paul says, you can not vote in a government based on selfishness that only benefits you and your group or you end up with Fascism. Good film, though some of the acting ruined the experience a little for me, otherwise the rating would have been higher. See more
Finn M Feb 23, 2017 Fun RomCom. Great characterization by Judy Holliday.
Theodore P Nov 20, 2014 I really thought both Harry and Billie were well acted, esp Billie and more inventive characters then what we usually see. That accent of Billie was pretty unforgettable and so were some of her lines/delivery to Harry. However, I thought the character of Billie was kind of over the top stupid and sexist but I chalk some of that up to the time. Ditsy or not Billie was very likable. I just liked the main message of standing up against brutality/bribery and all the great talk of what ideals America was built on. I was hoping the movie would get more romantic than it did, but that's not what the film was about despite the movie cover. Really loved all the costumes/outfits of Billie and the art deco apt. I just want to know what idiot hires a gorgeous and refined tutor for their wife lmao. See more
