What to Know

Critics Consensus

Bleak, haunting, and yet still somehow hopeful, Winter's Bone is writer-director Debra Granik's best work yet -- and it boasts an incredible, starmaking performance from Jennifer Lawrence.

A rewarding, richly detailed exploration of the strength of character required when confronted by ugly truths. Go to Full Review

The Coen Brothers' O Brother Where Art Thou? was the last film to make such delirious use of mountain music. The rest of the world can start drooling over Lawrence. I'm gonna git me a copy of that soundtrack. Go to Full Review

The film, adapted by director Debra Granik and Anne Rosellini from the novel by Daniel Woodrell, establishes a formidable tension between mystery and matter-of-factness. Go to Full Review

Granik and Lawrence paint a gray world in which the patriarchy is indifferent at best and actively hostile at worst to women’s aspirations and stories. Go to Full Review

What makes “Winter’s Bone” a revelation is not necessarily the story itself but the tonal and atmospheric understanding of this world that the cast and crew bring. Go to Full Review

3.5/4
This is an engrossing film, one about the different ways in which people react to impossible situations. And without becoming hackneyed or corny, the story offers a moving solution when it could have so easily fallen into a trap of hopelessness. Go to Full Review

Luke R Apr 16, 2019 Nothing at all happens in this movie, how does it have these ratings?
Theodore W Mar 18, 2019 Acting is incredible across the board- Jennifer Lawrence is amazing. It's overall a very thought-provoking with so many subtle and/ or underlying messages, and ultimately portrays what could sadly be a true, real-life situation in today's world for some. It can leave one wondering what kind of ideal future would someone in Lawrence's character's shoes even have the option of pursuing without the essential support from her missing parents, or with the every day hurdles/obligations that appear to be impossible to overcome on her own....How does one survive and realistically put an end to the dark every day living conditions and social circumstances that appear to be long established by a dark generational cycle that she and the siblings her character is raising are forced to endure? All these questions may be raised because of the incredible portrayal by the actors, the original and at times painful emotion-triggering plot, the legal aspects accurately presented, and the inarguable reality of the situation potentially suffered by some. Finn W Feb 3, 2019 Winter's Bone is a haunting movie about a part of society we rarely see highlighted in the media (unless you're a fan of such shows as Justified): poor, white people scraping by however they can. Jennifer Lawrence, an actress I've reluctantly followed since I first became aware of her in The Hunger Games, gives an excellent performance in this film - the character is a tough, no-nonsense girl who is dealing with way more than any 17 year old ought to have to handle. Also excellent performance from John Hawkes. See more
Feb 1, 2019 Boring movie with hocus pocus storyline
George M Jan 17, 2019 Dark, brooding and a little gruesome, the further in poverty, the closer to nature. I went in to this movie knowing who is Jennifer Lawrence. See more
George R Dec 30, 2018 1/12/2019 This film absolutely looked good on paper as it was critically acclaimed and had high audience approval. But I personally got bored as it was an almost pointless day by day account in rural Missouri, save for the pivotal death that happened. See more
