What to Know

Critics Consensus

April Fool's Day takes a decent stab at deconstructing the slasher genre, but an underwhelming story keeps it from really sinking in.

It’s become a favorite of the sub-genre, and indicates a point where studios were beginning to satirize the tropes of the sub-genre. Go to Full Review

Also in its favor is the fact that it’s rather good natured about its mayhem, which is to say that its grisly parts are never of the unpleasantly sadistic variety. It’s kind of fun. Just don’t be expecting an overlooked masterpiece. Go to Full Review

It had been a good 15 years or more since I last watched this film and it was great to see it not only holds up well but cleans up just as nicely, too. Go to Full Review

Responsible for the seminal stalk-and-slash movie When a Stranger Calls, director Fred Walton made a belated return to the much-maligned genre he helped create with this amusing diversion, inspired more by Agatha Christie than by Friday the 13th. Go to Full Review

Luke M Mar 3, 2019 This is one of the BEST "who done it?" Movies I've ever seen. I remember watching this when i was a kid, when it first came out, and thinking, ...what a great idea! Im going to do that when i grow up! Of course i never did, but i feel like this movie really set the path for murder mystery weekend getaways! 2 thumbs up!!! See more
Albus R Jun 26, 2018 A pretty good plot, nice special effects. April Fool's Day follows a group of college students visiting a mutual friend at her island mansion. Everyones performances are very heart felt and the chemistry and lighting are perfect. good sound quality too. See more
Kylo R Jun 4, 2017 An underrated classic of a horroromedy, hurt by its genre-bending for those who just wanted to see a Halloween clone. It's as much Agatha Christie as goofy 80s slasher flick. Fine cast, engaging characters, quite nice special effects for the time--don't bother with the remake, it has nothing to do with this film. Give this one a shot. Aside from some dated hairstyles, it holds up surprisingly well. See more
Harry S Mar 8, 2017 One of the most clever, creative, and fun entries in the slasher genre.
Poe M Jul 29, 2007 I watched this as part of holiday-themed slasher kick I was on for a time. Silent Night, Deadly Night really got my hopes up, only to be dashed a bit by My Bloody Valentine which I, incidentally, fast forwarded through about a third of. I'm not sure how you could call this movie a slasher flick, but whatever it is, it isn't bad. Good acting, great plot. All it really lacked was real suspense (there again, I'm not sure why it was called a slasher in the first place) and a decent music score (but when was the last horror movie you saw with decent music?). I was pleasantly surprised. See more
Anakin R May 31, 2007 One of the best and most underrated slasher flicks to come out of the 80s. Horror fans seeking a gorefest will have to look elsewhere, as this plays out more like an Agatha Christie mystery than Friday the 13th. What makes April Fool's Day stand out are the terrific performances, smart script, and a surprising amount of humour. Director Fred Walton (When A Stranger Calls) and writer Danilo Bach (Beverly Hills Cop) bring a lot of style and fun to the movie, rather than exploitation and nastiness. The characters are well-developed, the cast is extremely likeable, there's plenty of suspense, and Charles Bernstein (A Nightmare on Elm Street) provides a terrifically creepy score. Like I said, if all you want are blood and guts, this isn't the horror flick for you. But if you actually appreciate witty writing, strong characters and atmospheric direction, you'll find a lot to love in April Fool's Day. See more
